[NEWBIE] Stay with hard labor or go PC

Hi Everyone!



Being NEW to this an having just read a thread on the Porter Cable devices - I have a question! I am a Zaino user, but do everything the old fashioned way. I have never made the leap to an orbital power buffer -I have always heard the stories of horror - "I know a guy who burned right through the paint on his '65 stang, that buffer just tore it up" or "Yeah he was just buffing along and the whole car burst into flames"



I have an '03 Yellow Vette, and would be devistated if I destroyed the paint. I know Yellow is a good color for hiding scratches and such, but I just wanted to know if it is realistic for someone to just pick up one of these things and go to town and get good results?

I just bought a PC and will be going to town on my Mercedes. If you read a lot here you should be all good. :up I've been here for a year now and have read a year. I still don't have it down right, but I'm always improving!



I also plan on testing the PC on my washing machine for practice. (Thanks to Scottwax for that idea)
 
I was a little nervous the first time I touched my car with the PC.



Turns out that it's not that hard (it's actually easy), and the only way to screw up the paint is to:

1) Use too harsh of an abrasive, -or-

2) Drop the PC on the car



As long as you're working with fine polishes and waxes/sealants, you won't have a problem.

Ragtop_Rob- Yeah, get the PC. Your C5 has pretty hard paint (I had a '99); you won't mess it up with the PC unless you do something VERY unusual. The horror stories you hear are about ROTARY polishers, a totally different animal (but even THOSE aren't bad if you use common sense).
 
...another former "ain't no way a buffer is touchin my cars" to "use the PC every time" convert here. I don't use the PC for applying zaino, but for stuff like Meg #6 or 3M SMR the PC is

awesome. Start slow, maybe volunteer something other than

the Vette first (even a rental car!:) ), and you'll be comfortable very quickly.

Hmmm.... Hard Labor vs. PC....decisions, decisions! I vote PC!!!



I'll be honest, I was hesitant about putting out $185 or so including PC pads. But since getting mine I've picked up about 10 paid detailing jobs, with 5 more waiting. Paid for the PC easily and you just get used to how to use it right. Its a huge time saver and you'll do better detailing letting the PC provide the oomph, instead of your own arms.
 
I actually just did my very first detail using a PC last weekend and there's really nothing to it. I was very scared that I will mess up my Z but after the first hour all of that goes away.

adrenaline rush, I would look at buting your pads from CMA or here on Autopia. Detailers Paradise is having a sale on pads right now too.
