Newbie Question: LC Pad Installation

I have a newbie question re: LC Pad installation for the PC 7336. I bought an LC Starter Kit with a 5" backplate, and a full selection of pads. My question is, do these pads just velcro onto the back plate, or somehow, are they suppose to fit over top such as the pads in this article:

I have never seen a PC assembled with pads and backplate. I do not see why the pads are called hook and loop...what does the name mean?



For clarification, the pads and plate I bought are the following combination.

Yes, they just velcro onto the back. Most pads don't have the recessed area like those in the article you mentioned.



"Hook and loop" is the generic term for Velcro.
 
Today the Velcro companies are the leaders in hook and loop fasteners. Recent technical advances have included the development of a unique, patented moulded hook fastener called ULTRA-MATE® brand HTH (High Technology Hook), which can be manufactured from a number of resins and engineered to achieve specific performance characteristics.



Always use a smaller sized Velcro backing plate then the Velcro foam pad you are using (i.e. a 6-inch Velcro backing plate and a 6.5-inch Velcro foam pad) Never use a Velcro backing plate that is larger then the Velcro backed foam pad.



Pads must be matched to an appropriate product to achieve the desired results. A 5-inch diameter backing plate when used with a 6.5 -inch foam pad allows a 0.75-inch `safety' margin' between the edge of the backing plate and the foam pad. To ensure compatibility of fit with a Porter-Cable the post adaptor should be a 5/16th-inch-24 threaded shaft.



Flexible Backing Plates:

To centre a foam pad on the PC, set it upside down with the Velcro backing plate facing up (this is easier if the side handle is attached). Using the tips of your fingers as spacers against the edges of the backing plate, you can centre it with near perfection most of the time
