Newbie needs info on Scratch (Vandalism)

No problem, BTW, once in awhile we have a LIVE CHAT that goes on during the week, all depends who's on etc.

You will see ~~~LIVE CHAT GOING ON NOW~~~~ in the home threads. Go to the top right and click on CHAT and join us.

Wetsanding is not all that bad as long as you step the level of paper. 1500, 2000 3000 then light compound. Sometimes it's best left to those that do it often, as they have the skill and touch.

Just take your time and use good 100% cotton towels to polish with since you do not have a PC (Porter Cable) polisher, which is one of THE safest devices to polish paint with as you'll never burn a finish with it. Don't use those cotton applicator sponge combo pads as they use VERY cheap cotton pile. Use Fieldcrest or Cannon etc 100% cotton towels. Another test, burn off a small thread from the towel, if you get a black trail of smoke from it, it's not 100% cotton.

One member you may want to PM who is the PRO on hand polishing is SCOTTWAX. See his pics and you'll understand! he just recently got a PC, but prior... ALL HAND!

Any luck on this problem yet?

Inquiring minds (and eyes) want to know:p

Have a safe and happy Fourth!

The point is assisting a new member of Autopia who's never had to resolve a problem such as what he's pointed out.

He is reaching out to all of us for assistance and advise on how to correct this damage, that's all. Being new to the forum and new to finish care he's not sure on what to do. Can it be polished out? Does it HAVE to be touched up? etc.

That's also why I sent him his very first products to attempt any correction. Seeing that he does not do this all the time, I felt it necessary to give him some DACP and SFP in 8oz bottle to give it a try and to maybe improve the finish on his car as well as get the hang of future deatail work on it being it's a new BMW.

I'm sure you guys remember your first attempt...Thanks to this forum and others like it, new people can now find advise!

I hope he has some luck and will follow all the advise given out in both replies and links to articles on how to resolve damages.

Have a safe and happy Fourth of July guys/gals! :)

Deanski,

It looks AWSOME! I went slow and deliberatley. First, it didn't look like anything was better or happening, but I kept at it, and now it's virtually gone! :) I still may have to wet sand a certain area cause it didn't come out as well, but about %80 of the section looks wonderful and is gone! Thanks! I was so excited, I did a little victory dance in my garage (I'm sure my neighboors think I'm crazy). I'll take pictures when I get a chance. Can't thank you enough Deanski.......and the entire fourm. Thanks! Talk to you later.

And about your reply, very well put. I am a newbie, and don't know a polisher from a wax. I am totally clue-less when it comes to detailing. I work in the computer industry, so I know how "stupid" some people feel when they ask questions. I've even had CEO's and Executives tell me they didn't want to call with a problem or ask a certain question cause they didn't want to get the "stupid face" (the face a lot of computer guys give people when the answer is totally obvious to the computer guy....I'm sure everyone has either seen the face or done it). So, thus I'm that guy right now. I'm that guy who, in my job, would ask "Why can't I burn a DVD in my CD-Burner? They're both discs?". Everyone has a first, and this is definatley my first. I've been consuming tons of knownledge that Deanski and others have thrown my way. So, with all the rambling, just wanted to say thanks for helping a newbie and first timer. I apologize to those who get annoyed with "newbie" questions, but I had to go somewhere. Talk to you later.

P.S. I LOVE meigurs now (cause it fixed my car :)), but I've read some opinions that Zymol is a bit better? I can find meigurs more easily around here though, but it Zymol better? Or are they both about on par, and it's more your technique that one should worry about? Thanks again! I'll take pictures soon.

- Earnest, a happy little camper

Zymol's line of products is not as extensive as Meguiars. I do not believe they make polish at all, they do have wash and some cleanerand conditioners . Meguiars makes waxes, polishes, cleaners, conditioners, etc, etc. Maybe some like Zymol *wax* betterthan similar products from Meguiars :nixweiss

Souvent,

I too am in the IT field. I am a Lead Field Engineer, III for the eastern region of Getronics and sevice Wachovia, CitiFinancial, AXA and others. Know the look and problems well :)

Glad to know it's going well for you! You'll notice now that swirls will be non-existent with the use of DACP in cases of moderate swirls or SFP in case of light swirls or micro-marring.

As for Zymol, it's a wax and they have many lines. Not bad, but cost is a bit much for wax.

I've been playing with Wolfgang Sealant and Poorboy's EX-P sealant and you can see the pics here:

My SC430 with WG & EX-P

You may want to look into: WG or EX-P for that color, or Klasse AIO.

Good hearing from you:xyxthumbs

Deanski,

Car looks awsome! Saw one the other week. I had to pause cause the top was going down, and I had to watch it. :)

Yes, I read your post, and will have to look into it. It's easy to "clean" my car, but hard to get my car to really shine, like that new car shine, instead of just silver. I want to try and really bring out the "metallic silver", so it's more noticable. My freind has a black Trailblazer, and after he washed/waxed, it look new, amazingly pretty. Mine is still "silver". We'll see how the sealeant works. I've now getting a descent detailing collection. :). Pics coming soon...promise.

And yeah, my IT field is working for the IU Center for Cell and Virus theory. Biological/computational programming. Did hardware for a while, but my knack is software development/engineering (spelling?).

I'll tell you, try the Poorboy's EX-P on the silver, which by the way is an easy on and off product. Makes it really shine!

Then, find a motorcycle shop and look for S100 wax in a white tub with a blue top. Pick that up as well.

Once you apply, say two coats of EX-P, wait 24 hours after last coat. Apply the S100 on top of the EX-P and be ready to watch the silver just "POP" out at you with a very wet and deep look.

Here's the EX-P: Poorboy's EX-P

You can also order S100 online as well from CMA and other sites. It's cheaper than P21S which is the same product really.

S100 Wax

Or you can go a bit higher-end in wax with Pinnacle Signature wax: Pinnacle Signature Wax

That wax on top of most anything for silver metallics is just one of the best I've used only for metallic finishes and carnuba together.

If you like the way my SC430 looks with EX-P, wait till you try it on silver!

Getting costly isn't it? But well worth it!!!

Deanski

A lot of people seem to think that Meguiar's #16 is a near clone of S100/S21S (theyre basically the same). #16 is kinda tricky though, gotta put it on really thin, but it lasts a really long time. I've had it consistently last 2 months. #16 you can get direct from Megs for under $15, and one tin will literally last you almost a decade.

Damn I forgot about that... You're right:xyxthumbs

Give that a try if you have difficulty obtaining S100/P21S.

Let me know if you purchased any Poorboy's EX-P yet!

Regards,

Deanski
