You shouldn't need to top NXT... only if you aren't quite happy with the look.
Paste vs. Liquid=difference in application/# of uses. Usually easier to apply liquid by machine. Since you're doing it by hand, not an issue. Paste tends to give more applications than liquid, usually due to the paste not being put on overly thick. (Thiner is better-you're just wasting the product if you apply it thick, as you're just wiping it all off.) Also, I've found there to be a slightly darker look to the paste NXT vs the liquid, but I haven't done any indepth analysis of it. Just a first impression.
