I'm Phil from Connecticut, I am opening my detail shop this week. The first question I have is....Is it better to clean the engine before or after you wax the exterior? I n the past I did it after I waxed the exterior then i was told I should do it before....

I always do it before because inevitably you'll get splash from the engine detail onto your paint.

Welcome to DC.

Engine cleaning is always the step I tackle right after I do the wheels and tires and before washing the rest of the vehicle.

Some guys like to do the wheels and tires after washing because they use the same buscket and wash water for both. So the reasoning is to save the dirtier job for last to keep the wash water cleaner for the wash.

My reason for doing the wheels and tires first is because I don't like to have the vehicle wet any longer than necessary. I would have to dry the vehicle before moving on to the wheels and tires and that would slow my routine down.

Doing the engine after the wheels and tires and before the exterior wash keeps the washing process efficient and when your working in 100 degree weather you want to be as efficient as possible.
