New to detailing. Need some tips please

I'm new to this whole detailing thing but i would like to basically just remove swirl marks and light scratches. I just wash my car with meguiars gold class.
But I would like to wash, clay, remove swirls, and then wax. What products would you recommend for each?

Also is there really a difference between an orbital and a porter cable? the orbital at my local store is $20, and the pc is $150 lol i dont want to just drop an extra 130 for nothing. thanks :)
 
The look you are wanting to achieve depends on several different things.

Some that come to mind are:
1. What color is the car?
2. How much time do you want to spend on it?
3. What level of prefection are you looking for?
4. How much do you want to spend on products and equipment?

As far as your question about the orbital and a porter cable goes, they are not even in the same league with each other. The portable cable is a far superior machine to the orbital. If you are going to be doing swirl removal you will need to get the porter cable. Not trying to sound rude or anything here, but it would help if we had more info about the car and what your expectations are with your car.

i have a 99 clk320 in silver and i was planning on spending a whole day just pampering it lol. Id like to have it almost like when it was brand new and cost isnt really a factor anymore for the pc or orbital i'm pretty much just getting the pc. as for products maybe no more than 20 a bottle i guess? I really miss that factory shine
 
First Welcome to the group.

The PC is a wise investment, the orbital type buffer set up is usually good for spreading waxes or sealents. The PC will allow you to get out swirl marks, light scratches etc.

As far as products are concerned it ends up being a preference of how comfortable you feel working with them. As far as price goes, expensive doesn't always mean better. You can find great products for under $20 a bottle. Personaly I would pick up the Poorboys SSR line up and some Natty's wax. For me and many others here they have become a staple in our detailing routines.
 
Welcome Dennis. You could most everything you need or want from TROY @ DETAIL CITY. He has the machines, pads, Poorboys products.Id add some sealant of some sort either EX or Exp from Poorboys along with SSR line up and some Nattys blue. Beeemerboy will probably add some good steps and probably products. Steve at Poorboys is also a good resource on info on his line up of product and fast shipping from Steve and Pockets @poorboys world. A very nice place to start with products at a good price, they dont handle the machines or pads from what ive seen on the web site. RANDAL
 
I would definitely go with the PB's SSR lineup and EX-P topped with Natty's white. That's my combo for all silver cars I do. You will like how the EX-P will make the metallic flake in your paint sparkle. Let us know if you need help with the PC and your pad selection.

This very sage advice. Good vendor and great products. I have used a plethora of products but have returned to Poorboy's product after trying everything else. Results are what i am looking for. Price is right and service is very good from Poorboy's as well as our forum sponsor, Detail City.
