A month or so back I started a thread on an idea for a new cutting pad design...I had some follow-up thoughts since I've had some time to experiment.
Basically, I was calling for a light cutting/heavy polishing pad whereby a thin layer of orange foam would be glued to more flexible foam; a flat face and edge-to-edge backing would of course also be in order. Since then I have logged many many hours on orange LCVC pads I shaved down so the orange foam was nearly flat and a little more than 1/4" thick - they have worked as anticipated...increased flexibility/maneouvering and MUCH safer. The only problem is that the overall pad needs to be thicker, and then we'd have the perfect cutting pad!
On the "safe" note, the orange LCVCs and even more so, the orance CCS pads can be downright dangerous (via rotary) due to the thickness and contour of the orange foam. Simply put, the rounded contour on the face of these pads have nearly caused disiaster for me twice - because the rounded off area does not collect any product (which serves as lube), it can burn paint when contacting painted surfaces...this can happen when polishing up to a fender that has at least a 30 degree angle. The result is dry rubbing, given the stiffness and texture of the orange foam, can burn paint very quickly. Point is, a flat-faced pad avoids this problem, though it might not "look" as good as well rounded pad face.
Anyone else shaved down one of these orange LCVCs yet?
