I have a Craftsman 315.10520 Polisher/Sander. This is the older model with the smaller thread size, not 5/8". Does anyone know where I can get a backer for it to put the Velcro buffing pads on it? Or does anyone know of an adapter for it? I think its 3/8", but I haven't checked. I'd rather not buy a new one because this one looks brand new, It was sitting in my grandfathers shed for about 15 years not being used.

Welcome and for a BP I would try looking into Ebay or even maybe Sear's might still some in their system. Good luck.
 
it will be hard to get a backing plate for your polisher unless you know the size, if you can bring the backing plate into lowes/home depot and try to find a bolt that fits or use their handy thread size finder they have hanging up in the hardware dept. however, i looked up that polisher and imo, i would just hang onto it for sentimental value if it has any and buy something newer (i always try to have people work with what they already have and save their money) reason why is because of #1 backing plate size you wont be able to find something that just bolts right on unless you get it custom machined, #2 it only has two speeds which is not what we use now in polishing a car, we use polishers with about 6 speeds so we can adjust to the task at hand, #3 the power the unit has (4 amps) will bog way down with any type of pressure which you need when correcting defects. imo, a harbor freight rotary would be better then what you have. i use one now and it does work good if you know how to deal with the machine slowing down with pressure(so you adjust speed higher then you need it). and get a proper backing plate and pads. but since your a new guy i honestly would go with a DA or just save up for now. if you dont have the right eqiuptment and tools to do it correct dont do it at all is my motto!(not trying to put you down just trying to be realistic) good luck and if you need any more help feel free to ask!

After doing some research on that model I would consider picking up a newer style polisher.

The speeds of the machine are too high and the motor is slightly under powered.

Now if you really want to make it work, pick up some Velcro brand tape (3M strong tape on one side and velcro on the other). You can apply tape it to the backing plate, then trim it. The 6 inch backing plate on the mode will accept 7.5 inch curved CCS Pads.

Ultimately though I think you flirting with danger because of machine speed.
