hey guys. i have been reading a lot on here and decided to register.

i bought a black with black leather 95 acura legend coupe. the car has swirls and scratches all over it.. little but noticeable all over the entire car! i decided that i'm going to go buy a PC today somewhere and give it a shot to work on it.

i was reading on the mequiars forums and many said that orbitals will not remove swirls. they said i will need to get a rotary. i dont want to buy both but i want to be able to wax safely/buff safely and i also want to use a swirl remover or medium cut bottle of meguiars. i read that those will not work with orbitals... so i need to know so i can not waste my money.

i also want to deepen the black color of the car and have a deep reflection. right now its got a decent reflection.. but its not deep. it seems its just a not well-cared for car. any way to bring back the deepness, remove the swirls and remove the scratches with a PC? and what am i going to need that i can get from an o'reilies, autozone, pepboys, or walmart? (getting the PC from lowes i think)./

thanks in advance! sorry for the lengthy post.. :book:

Hi & Welcome to the City!!
Have you every used a Rotary? If not, I don't recommend using your black car as a "training ground".
But I think that with an agressive enough pad & swirl remover & finishing up with a polish, you should be able to remove most of the swirls on your car with the PC.
I'm sure that some others will weigh in with specific product/pad combos they would recommend. I buy most of my products on-line, so I don't really know what's available in your area. Sorry.

yea i've never used a rotary. didn't plan on using one either. i think i'll go track down a pc after i get out of class today. and mainly whats available to me at the autoparts shops is some of meguiars line and stuff thats standard in walmarts (turtle wax, mothers, etc.)

i was thinking maybe get mequiars medium cut or swirl remover, followed by mequiars show car glaze. i already clayed the car (missed a few spots i will prob go over today). so i'm not sure if theres anything else i need to put on the body.

If you need a PC combo that will cover all of your bases you might want to consider the Optimum Detailing kit from autogeek. It has the Optimum twins, they're the best polishes I've run into thus far, along with OCW, some MFs, and an orange pad which should be a good starting pad if you've got mild to moderate swirling. For a more complete PC outfit you can also get the PC kit, it has all the pads you'll need for a while and a PC to boot. Remember the detail city 10% discount when ordering (code: detailcity).

I think many of those who say orbitals can't remove swirls are just repeating what they have heard/read on detailing boards. I know of two orbitals that can remove swirls from personal experience - the PC and the Cyclo. Too often, people take what they read on these boards as the gospel truth, and many times they are getting bad or inaccurate advice. I will agree that a PC would be a good purchase, as it's relatively inexpensive and user friendly. And yes, it will remove light to moderate swirling, marring, etc.

got a 7336. it was the only model i could find in town. got it for 109 bucks. not bad. came with polishing pad so i got some terry bonnets. now what kind of bonnets do i useto apply wax and apply the swirl remover and then buff it off. i have another clean terry bonnet and i also have a wool bonnet. and i could use the foam polisher that came with it but how do i clean it afterwards?

Shaar,
I would highly recommend that you toss the pad that came with the PC. Most people never even attempt to use it...it usually just falls apart and/or flings itself in pieces across the room. ;)

You'll want to buy a 5" backing plate along with some 6.5", or even 5.5" pads, depending on what you prefer. My recommendation is to get a few of each, and experiment to see what you like.

Bonnets are more or less used for REMOVING waxes and sealants. Use the wool pad to stick the bonnet over.

My personal preference in bonnets is microfiber. It holds more product, is softer, and therefore has less of a chance of scratching the paint. After removing wax/sealant with a bonnet, I usually follow up with a microfiber towel by hand just to ensure that all of the product is removed.

For swirl removers, you'll want to use either a polishing pad, light-cutting pad, or a cutting pad (depending on the amount of bite you're looking for - ALWAYS take the least abrasive approach possible!). To apply wax, a finishing or glazing pad is best.

Cleaning foam pads is simple - a bucket of warm water along with a dedicated pad cleaner is what I prefer. DP Micro Rejuvenator powder works well and comes in 16oz. sizes, or you can use a laundry detergent such as Woolite. Agitate pads with a brush, let them sit for awhile, and then rinse in cool water. I prefer to let them air-dry as spinning them dry usually makes a mess and can damage the pads.

Hope this helps!

My car is covered with cobweb scratches and etches water spots. Up close I think the finish looks like crap, but I keep it shiny enough that you can't really tell how bad it is.
After all the research I've done to find a way to remove all the imperfections that drive me nuts, this is what I ended up purchasing. I'm a 1st time PC user.
Combo pad kit from Meguiar's (5 1/2in backing plate, 2 w8006 polishing pads, 1 w9006 finishing pad). Poorboy's SSR2.5 swirl removal, SSR1 swirl removal. I was tossed between Poorboy's and Meguiar's #83 DACP, and #80 glaze polish. From what I've read the Poorboy's product is a little more user friendly. I might go with a pure polish after the SSR1. Then I will top off with Meg's NXT Tech wax.
