New Guy Looking for a Good Starting Point

Hey guys, I am new here at Autopia and my name is Erik. I have been/am a member of a number of car forums for both cars I have owned. I always try to keep my car clean and tiddy but have never gotten into detailing in a big way, as I was always too busy modding them. Not to long ago I picked up a 2004 Toyota Matrix XRS in Solar Yellow, and while the previous owner took care of the car mechanically, the paint has seen better days. I dont know much but I am thinking with a good polish and wax it will look a hundred times better. The car will be used for autox and time attack (I know, wierd choice of car for such activities) but I want to make my other hobby detailing now. I have been using basic off the shelf Meguires and Mothers products and applying them by hand and it always turns out okay but I know there is more to it. My dad also drives a Lexus RX350 that I am responsible for detailing as he owns his own business and is too busy to do most things himself, so I definately want to make sure I do it justice.

So after that long explanation I guess my question is what are some opinions on some products and things to pick up to start making my care car a little more advanced? I know that it has been asked before but figured I would through it out there to start. Cheers.

Welcome to Autopia!

I'd try these:

Meguiar's D300 polishing compound

Meguiar's Micro Fiber DA Cutting Pads

You'll have your paint looking better then new in no time.

I unfortunately do not have a Porter Cable or rotary tool at the moment, I am looking to get one in the future when some more funds are available to me......
