Even though the weather is still pretty terrible out I'm planning on bringing a little life back to my poor neglected 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. It spent most of its life outdoors but now has a garage to stay warm and dry in.

I picked up a PC 7424 as well as a blue, orange and white pad and a backer plate along with some Meguiar's Ultimate Compound. My GTP is black and while I've tried to wash it with only microfibers and keep it generally clean it does have swirls and defects.

My plan is to clay, wash and then use the PC and the compound to "buff" it out. Any other steps I should take before/after and was the Ultimate Compound a good choice? I went back and forth between that and the 105/205 combo.

Also wondering how you get into spaces like the spoiler:

Or around the side skirts where the 5.5" pads would be tight:

What about the door ding molding and door handles? How do you prevent getting polish/sealant stuck in the gaps?

Looking forward to learning a lot here, even if it is just making a 9 year old car somewhat presentable.

Thanks!

Welcome to AutopiaForums!

Tight areas may require hand polishing. You can remove excess product from creases with QTips and or a MF wrapped around an old hotel key card (or similar card).

Am I reading that correctly? Ultimate Compound is most aggressive? I bought it because I thought it was more in the middle. Being my first time at this I don't want to sand the paint, I just want to see what's under those fine scratches.:inspector:

Megs UC is a good choice & is less aggressive than M105 or M101.
If you have swirls and fine scratches then UC should work for you.
UC is a lot cleaner and easier to work with than Megs M105.

What size backing plate and pads did you purchase?
I'd suggest using UC with a orange pad to remove the swirls.
Follow UC with Ultimate Polish (UP) & a white pad for clarity & gloss.
