New Common Core question

It seems like they don't want the kids to remember the multip tables. But use charts like above.

Can this be any good?

Ron,

Thanks for posting this...

Wait till you see what the Communistic Core teaches about God, prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, and so on.. FRIGHTENING...

We all grew up learning something simple like the multiplication tables, and a zillion years hence, we can still figure out this stuff in our heads, without any equations, etc..

Yeah, let's make it really hard on the kids because some LeftWingHairyLeggedTreeHugger/Professor/Of/???/NitWitDom/ thought this is what they need... Really???

Actually I thought it was Jeb that was pushing it. But no matter who likes it, it's garbage.

I did know about the data collection aspect about it too. But GF was more concerned with the BS of this type of this crap.

One of her kids is in 3rd grade, where they have the testing that is something like a weeks straight (+1 week for other testing). If you miss is, you get held back

1 week straight of testing ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!, no free time except lunch

This is a frustrating topic for me since my daughter will be in school soon. How much time do they think parents have to sit around to help with their kids homework? 2 hours? 3 hours? You can be certain crap like that chart will confuse some kids so they won't be able to do homework on their own. I hate the idea of homework and the amount of testing that is going on nowadays. I'm gonna put my daughter in a hippie tree hugging school if this non sense gets any worse lol.

I blew a nut when my daughter brought home a math book from CATHOLIC school with common core printed on it. I'm about to go apesh*t with the bishop for allowing this crap. Why the hell do I pay tuition if we are going to use this garbage???

I remember taking algebra I and II, geometry, and calculus in High School, and that was fine..

Little kids do not need to be cracking their little, pure, beautiful, brains on this nutty stuff at that age - ever -

We all grew up just fine learning and memorizing all those multiplication tables, remember long division? fractions? Once you got the multiplication tables down, you could now see how they related to division and then of course, fractions..

For awhile you did problems in those workbooks (remember them?), had some homework, and pretty soon, it all just fell into place..
What could be easier than that ?

Isnt it great that after all those years of school and then some, one can pretty much figure out about everything - in your head - without even needing to break out a pencil, paper and put it all into an algebraic equation to solve it?

I have seen kids ( my former wife's step-kids), grow up with a lot of this ga-ga before it became Commie-Core, etc., and you know what - they still had a hard time in math, and some of them never ever got Calculus - and these were very smart kids...

And yes, I remember it being almost maddening to see them go through all these steps to arrive at something I just knew in my head soon as I saw the problem on the paper..

In Commie-Core-Land, everyone will be pretty much programmed because of B/S like this, to do everything only 1 way - the Commie-Core-Way...

The Commie-Gov. will tell everyone how to live, live their lives, and pretty much suck the life out of everyone in the process...

It's coming.....

Long bread-lines - optional...

If they get fed funds, they have to

This kid has a note book of charts. It's like they are going to be dependent on charts to help solve problems, instead of using their heads.

Pearson sold everybody a crock

I know, I know...but when you switch your kid to private school and pay tuition MAINLY to get away from this govt crap...and then it still shows up, it's frustrating. One of the whole reasons I switched them out of public school was to get the govt out of their education and GOD back into it! Most public schools around here don't even say the pledge any more. Very sad.

Agreed.

At least you don't have to worry about things you as a parent should be teaching, being taught in school. Both my boys went to private school their whole school life.

Common Core, at least for math, as someone's PHD project. It is interesting how some like Jeb Bush are supposedly behind it. I do not think it is a commie plot or religious law imposition (sharia or judeo-christian) but just maybe not a good idea in its current form.

The fundamental education problem is not common core nor would it solve it.

I don't care who is behind it or not. The more I see the work come home, the more I am convinced, IT is stupid. Not the kids.

I also abhor the data collection crap.

Gee, all sorts of things come to mind regarding having kids grow up *dependent* on something other than their critical thinking abilities, huh? Why, we wouldn't want a whole generation of people who know how to process info now would we? :(

Actually, I can remember the whole "gotta learn multiplication" thing- my mother explained to me (and I was a pretty young kid at the time) that 1) you have to memorize multiplication tables because life doesn't give you time to really *think* about "what twelve times seven" is, you gotta have it just as quickly and naturally as taking a breath, and 2) you gotta be able to *think* your way through the same multiplcation process for those times when the needed calculation is a lot more complicated than that. What they were teaching me in school (mid-'60s) was an attempt to short-cut the process, and she wasn't gonna have me grow up arithmetically challenged.

Yep. Our generation turned out soooo bad......

To think we made it through school without having to take prescriptions to keep us in line too

Ronkh- Yeah, in a different time, in different circumstances....well, I shudder to think about how I woulda been labeled/dealt with.
