I just picked up an 06 STi and am wondering what the first step in paint care should be. Since it's brand new, I think I should just clean it really well and wax, and not polish until the paint gets a little older. Does this sound reasonable? Also, anyone recommend a high quality wax for a new blue car? This is my first post, thanks a lot for your advice.

welcome to the world of subaru paint.. Some say it's soft but there are those(like me) how have different ideas. I would clay,light polish(with a pc and polishing pad(menzerna FP II,SSR 1,Opt polish)) and use Liquid sov for the wax/sealant. I know that would look great because it would make a candy like apperance for your color blue.
Congrats on the new purchase. I have an 05 CGM and I used the Menzerna line. I used Menzerna IP, FP and FMJ. Car looks spectacular when I wash it and FK425 it. Unless you need the Menzerna IP I would caly it and then polish it a bit with IP and go for FMJ. Keep in mind that lots of cars come with lots of swirls by the dealer detailer. If it is swirl free then by all means go to the LSP (I used FMJ but most kinds will be fine). You can use carnauba or synthetic sealants. Both have their plusses and minuses.

Check the condition of the paint. Take the palm of your hand and wipe across a small section of the hood. Feel any bumps? 1. You need to clay it. Probably railroad dust. Then 2. polish with Menerza sp FPII. This should give you a clean finish. What do you want a beautiful shine with about 6 weeks of shine? 3. Use Red Moose Glaze 4. Then follow with the best wax Pinnacle Souveran. 5. Add a second coat 24 hours later. If you want a lasting more durable shine use Four Star Ultimate Paint Polish UPP instead of the Red moose and Sourv. Add a second coat 24 hours later. Enjoy!

You don't have to worry about holding off on using polishes and waxes "until the paint gets a little older" on a new car. Today's factory finishes are fully cured from the get-go. These days, it's only re-spray finishes that have a waiting period to follow.
