new car oil change

Hi all, we got a 2007 camry LE 3 months ago and had our first oil change done by the dealer. Not sure what oil they used but Im thinking about the next oil change.

I want to do it myself but not sure, should I? What is a good reccommended oil and should I go synthetic? Is it ok to go synthetic now if the current oil is not? Thank you.

but you should go for synthetic only after 10k miles......

I don't agree with that.

You are fine going synthetic right away. Why use sub-par oil for 10,000 miles, it makes no sense. I mean, if you have something to back that up, by all means post it. But I don't see the logic in that.

Anyways, you can't go wrong with Amsoil Synthetic. It's all I run in my car and it performs flawlessly and actually raised my MPG when I switched.

The argument against using synthetic initially is that engine won't break in because of the extreme antiwear properties of the synthetic...this of course isn't true, many engines are now coming from the factory with Mobil 1. Besides which, "antiwear" isn't the big feature of synthetics, it's their oxidation resistance and viscosity stability, etc.

Discussing oil is like religion or politics.

I'm old school in that I would recommend running any regular (dino) oil for the first 10K and then switching to synthetic. I have no hard proof to say this is the way to go but it is what I do.

Then at 10K if you want synthetic switch to whatever brand you prefer in the weight recommended by Toyota.

Oil has become so good now that any Dino or Synthetic will be fine unless. Often times used oil analysis will show that synthetic has no benefit over dino in real world application. If you want to talk oil check out www.bobistheoilguy.com. Then you will be buying every oil under the sun just like this site gets you to try every detailing product under the sun.:D

Enjoy your Camry. They are very nice cars!

with out adding my personal prefferance about what to use

so I don't start anything!

here are the answers to your questions

I want to do it myself but not sure, should I? : YES

What is a good reccommended oil? : Any quality name brand oil will me fine

should I go synthetic? that is up to you!

Is it ok to go synthetic now if the current oil is not? YES

Thank you all. Getting a new car sure is alot of things to learn. I always have changed my own oil with all my cars, but since getting a new car things do change quite a bit. I have to think more about long term, what oil, when to do what, and not to mention all the stuff about car detailing to learn. Sure is alot of stuff and things do look alot different.

I just found out my oil filter is way way under the car and I don't have all the lifting tools so looks like I might have to use the dealer for sometime until I get me some tools to lift the front. I wonder why they put the filter so so low at the bottom.

I see that alot of talks about M1 oil so I will look into that. Thanks again everyone.

the initial oil came from factory has additional molybdenum

watever believe what you want...either way it won't hurt your car

you save couple of bucks by not going synthetic at first 10k anyway...

If your car is not garaged, then I would recommend synthetic in a cold climate, heck its good in any climate. I would check out bobistheoilguy website, lots of information. If you go more than 3000 miles between oil changes, then definately get the synthetic. I personally prefer Pennzoil Platinum synthetic, its cheap and readily available in walmart. Mobil 1 is used to be the bomb before they changed the formula from fully synthetic to synthetic blend. Hope this helps.

Any quality dino oil will easily go 4500 to 5000 miles under normal driving conditions. The 3000 mile change interval has been concocted by the oil change industry.

That's interesting. So you already had your first oil change on a brand new car? Did you do it at 5k miles?

The reason I ask is that even when my low-technology F150 was brand new, I was told to go until about 7500 miles before an oil change so that the engine would break in better. I believe that from the factory, my truck has had synthetic-blend 5W20, so I wonder why your Camry wouldn't come off the assembly line with a quality synthetic or synthetic blend.

because Toyotas do not use Motorcraft Oil:)

When my vehicles were new, I dumped the facory fill at 1500 mi. I added dino or syn blend for 3000, then 4000, then the standard 5000. I'm unsure what your recommended intervals are? My Fords are 5000. Thus, I use whatever API SM 5w20 oil I find on sale. When Advance Auto has their BOGO sale, stock up on Pennzoil Platinum. It's an excellent oil for < $3/qt sale.

I assume you've checked the manual? In the manual for my car it said if you want to run synthetic oil, wait until 3k. I guess it's that whole break-in theory.

bobistheoilguy.com is what I go to with any/all oil questions....

I agree with what others have said about not changing the OE oil sooner than recomended. Although the factory may put M1 it is not the M1 you and I have access to as it has other properties to aid break in.

I decided to go with Motorcraft sythetic blend after using M1 for quite some time... After doing quite a bit of reading, and looking at OUA's from people running the MC Syn blend I decided to go for it.. It was a steal for $2.49qt vs. M1 $6.09qt

I plan on doing my next OCI at 3k miles just to get out all the M1, at that point I'm going to filler up with MC again, do my next OCI @ 4,500 - 5,000 miles and get on OUA to check out what's going on.

If you are past the break in perriod and want to run syn.. go for it.

The only cautions I've heard is high mileage engines that have been running dino and then switching to syn

Anyhow check out bitog.. you'll find everything oil related you will need.

Absolutely change the oil yourself; it is the smallest DIY job one can do, so why not do it? I use Ams Oil 100% synthetic as well and the quality is tough to beat.

Mobil1 used to be my favorite oil, BUT....I was on Z forums long before I got the car and since Zs have an oil pressure gauge in them, members were reporting that as soon as they started the car back up after replacing their oil with Mobil1, the pressure went through the roof; almost TWICE as much at idle as it was with dino or other synthetics!

Ams Oil has never caused that issue for me so I am very loyal to them.

Hi..I did change the first oil at 1500 miles even though the dealer told me to go up to 4000 or 5000 I forgot. I was in a dilema over this for awhile. Some say new car these days required very little break in and some say get rid of the first oil to get rid of the metal shaving at 300 or 500. After all these, I changed it anyways so the first oil change was at 1600 miles. The current 2nd oil change already has about 2400 miles and Im thinking about changing it soon. Thanks again all.

Honda has a special break in oil, but after that you are pretty much set to go. I swtiched my accord over just before 100,000KMs no leaks and everything is fine. :(:( to bad Mobil 1 sucks and they stopped making 0W-20 IMO the greatest oil I have used in my car to date.

M1 0W20 is available once again by the way.

I have changed my last three cars over to synthetic between 3000-3500 miles. No oil usage with any........ever. I choose to change oil & filter @ 7000-7500 miles intervals. Mobil 1 in all cases but I honestly don't feel the product is as good as it once was. There is absolutely no reason to wait 10K miles to switch over unless you have a diesel.

you don't need a lot of lift tool you can get a set of "rino ramps"

@ walmart for about $30 they work great and should last forever!
