Hi Guyz,



I was just wondering how many times can you polish before you completely "polish" away the clear coat that a new car comes in.



It's my understanding that everytime you polish your car, you take a layer of the clear coat away. If true, then you can only polish your car so many times until the clear coat no longer exists !



Please enlighten me with as much detail as possible.

That really depends on how abrasive the polish is that you plan to use. If you use a mild product like Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion, you could polish once a month for 10 years and not have a problem. A polish like 3M Swirl Mark Remove is a big heavier... I would not use it more than 2-3 times a year.

David offered some very good information as ususal, but what product you use along with the application method also is a big factor.



You can polish with 3M SMR (swirl mark remover) by hand 6 times a year by hand and in 10 years, it'll still look good (if you wax every 4-6 weeks or use a quality sealant every few months.) But if you use 3M SMR with a high speed rotary buffer 6 time a year, I think you are asking for trouble.



Zaino is non abrasive, just a coating over the surface, aka polymer sealant. Try to polish the car so it comes closest to perfect as possible then Z away.



Klasse - Klasse AIO can be used 2-3 times a year without harm. Klasse SG has no cleaners so you can layer away,



Blackfire - the polish, something around Pinnacle PCL maybe even milder.

You can always get a pen paint depth reader. It'll tell you how thick your paint is. The pen types are usually cheaper. Around $40. If you wanna spend the money, then you can get an electric one.



With it you'll be able to tell how thick your paint it and see how much you can safely remove.

Will this pen paint depth reader tool be able to determine the depth of the clear coat ?



I don't want to get rid of the clear coat and leave the actual layers of paint exposed everytime I wax and polish/seal.

for those of us worried about the future of blackfire products, the following info is from another detailing forum dated 7-15-11:

I also read on another forum that Todd Helme has accepted to position of Director of Development for Blackfire. Congrats Todd. I am happy to know the line is in good hands and will not be compromised as long as he is there.

Can I ask, will you have enough influence to create a Todd Helme Edition ######### Wet Diamond Sealant and label it as such? :thumbup:

Congrats on the new post and happy to see the product that keeps my car so shiney will continue on.
 
Don't know if I'm late on this or not but I just saw that Autopia car care is selling BF products. Thank god!

And I just bought some lol, don't know if its back ordered or not but I'll be getting it sooner or later. I haven't been using the products cause I didn't want to run out and be screwed.
