need some clay bar advise

Hi I am new to this forum and I am new to detailing my car.

I have a 2011 Audi A4 black.

Trying to do some clay bar. Is all clay bar works the same? like ones on ebay or amazon?

Please let me know so I can pick the right product.

thanks.

Yes. They all work in the same manner, but some are more aggressive than others. For the average person the Meguiar's or Mothers products at the local parts store is sufficient. I like the Meg's white for a mild clay. All clay can mar, so on black you want to keep that in mind unless you plan to polish after.

They don't all work the same, the claymagic blue is noticeably better than any other OTC. Mothers is the closest but its still not as good. Mothers does come with a bigger bottle of QD and a very nice towel, and you can usually use an Advance Auto coupon to score a great deal on it.

Since its your first time, make sure to use LOTS of lube, nothing worse than getting marring because you were stingy with the lube.

Thomas, how many vehicles (roughly) will that towel clean? Sounds interesting but I have not seen any reviews on it yet so kind of skeptical about it... If they work good I wouldnt mind buying a few of them to keep and sell locally out of my shop.

There is also the new fine grade hand pad coming out from NanoSkin. Same here, I bought 3 bars early this year and used one of them ONCE. I have the Speedy Towel, but plan to get the fine grade soon.

Fine Grade pad is out and has been for the last 2 weeks............absolutely amazing product, covers more area, contours accordingly and best off all "Hand fatigue is eliminated and No Marring"

fobbie- Welcome to Autopia! Fellow Audi-nut here...

It's hard to say how aggressively a new-to-you vehicle will need to be decontaminated. That's one reason why I'd "ABC" it instead. See if this link works: ValuGard Neutralization System That's what I do/recommend for every initial detail of newly acquired vehicles. Basically as simple as doing two additonal wash steps, and IME it works a lot better than mechanical decontamination such as clay (not that I have anything against clay; I use it all the time, just not for this). Less chance of marring with the ABC approach too as you're not rubbing something potentially abrasive across the paint.

I would consider using some Griots or Meguires clay. The towel thing looks kind of crazy. It is a good idea, but I would love to see the Micromarring after using the towel. It probably looks like catch scratches on a barn door.

Giving an opinion on a product you haven't tried? You will be very surprised by the result - in a good way

Barn door? I have tested the non-fine grade towel and used it about 12 times thus far. My own test car is a flat black BMW paint- 1999 3 series that scratches by rubbing my finger on the paint. I have used the towel under lights to check. No barn door stuff. You can get a ripple looking effect, but I only use this towel if polishing. Time savings = huge difference vs. clay. Also, fatigue is no issue.

Man, I was planning a nice thread for my 1000th post, but had to respond to this one. 1001 will be of higher quality and of more depth. :)

Can I use any clay lube with the pad?

I use only Nanoskin "Glide & Shock"..........It is recommended by Nanoskin the manufacturer of the pad to use their proprietary lubricants, Glide and Shock for the best results and performance. Others may be used but may or can induce excessive marring, other clay lubes may cause premature breakdown of the pad due to the chemical makeup. For the cost of Glide in a 7:1 concentrate, no other clay lube can come close to the price or performance......1 gallon = 8 gallons....$6.25 per gal.

we have adopted the NanoSkin AutoScrub into our detailing process at our shop and have embraced this technology and are proud to say we have used it for 3 months now with out picking up a claybar.

we have used a ton of lubricants with the system and they all work well. lately we have been grabbing Glide as a lubricant.

Feel free to check out some of the bundles we have on our site NanoSkin AutoScrub System at Detailer's Domain

I think for someone who is just doing their one car, and looking for advice on clay barring, it may be sufficient to purchase an OTC clay bar kit.

However, if you do a lot of clay barring, then the NPT and SM Arnold SPT sound ideal.
