Need help with PC7424 accessories

I'm going to be picking up a PC very soon.

They're on sale locally at Canadian Tire for $200. that's about the same price that Coastaltools.com is selling it for after shipping charges and exchange (plus i get valuble CT money! free detailing supplies! :) )

since search is down i have a question:

The costal tools 7424 comes with the 6" counterweight and 6" backing plate.

The PC 7424 accessory kit from CMA comes with a 6" velcro backing plate.

So i can buy the PC locally, get the PC7424 accessory kit from CMA and then the only thing that i would still need is the 6" counter weight, correct?

Does anyone have a part number for the 6" counterweight so I can order it from homedepot (or does CMA sell it also?)

Thanks

Check out on the front page, under recent articles - "The Definitive Porter Cable Accessory Thread" A goldmine that was put together by 4DSC.

The 7424 occasionally comes with the 6" counterweight. You'll only know when you actually have a look at the one get.

Ordering from CMA can be expensive in shipping. If you can find the pads locally, it'll be much cheaper for you.

I personally like the 3M Hook-it series. Didn't have a lot of success (to put it mildly with Meguiars W-64DA backing plate).

Meguiars pads are top notch and you should be able to find them locally.

Go to any Porter Cable Authorized repair shop and they'll be able to get you the 6" counterweight ($2-3 if I remember correctly). If you have trouble getting it, let me know I can easily get one for you.

Have fun, I love my PC...

hmm.. there's a 3M distributor in town - I got my 3M IHG from them. I'll call them up and ask what they have. they also carry Meguiar's stuff.

Thanks

check out 4dsc's thread from the bottom left corner of the homepage on the Definitive PC accessorizing thread. The 6" counterweight number is 699933. Check it out.

Since I personally had trouble trying to get my local PC shop to sell me a 6" CW, I like to suggest just getting a 7336 model instead. If you can get the CW easily though, $180 for the 7424 is a good price. :up

My personal views: If I were to do it over again, I'd just order the CMA pad kit because even the cheapest local Meguiar's pad prices didn't save me very much. CMA's VC design pads are supposed to be better handling anyway. I think CMA also ships USPS up here, which is a good thing. I'd also go for the Meguiar's W64DA instead because it's a bit lighter and (I swear they said this - darn nuked thread! ;)) people said it vibrated less because of this. I'm considering trying it out for comparison's sake.

who sells the 7336 in canada? I've only been able to find the 7424 and a 7" rotary buffer.

House of Tools sells the 7336 and they're in Canada. They didn't charge me shipping (may have been a promotion) and I got the 7336 a few days later.

Sure, I may have paid a bit more but I don't have to screw around trying to find the correct counterweight, etc. I also placed an order with CMA for their kit for the 7336.

Zilla,

The whole 5 vs 6 inch counterweight things is really a bit overhyped. I wouldn't go out and buy one model over another due to the counterweight issue. The difference is minimal at best and probably more "placebo bias" than actual fact. Since you know you have the 6" on, you think it vibrates less. The fact is, it's still going to vibrate a tremendous amount at speed 6.

The key things are:

1. The little plasticy thing that comes with it is for the handle. Make sure to use that spacer.

2. Like many have suggested, don't bother with the handle at all and hold the PC by top of the machine. Cut's down on hand fatiguq and vibration a lot.

The pads weigh next to nill, so the the counterweight isn't a bid deal.

Like I said, I can get the counterweight and ship it to you for less than $5 CDN. So don't worry too much about that.

179.99 + 30-40 Backing Plate

If the 7336 comes with a hock and loop backing plate, then it might worth it for 229.

It's funny you mentioned the counterweight and vibration issue. I just finished PMing something about that to someone. I did a test on this using different weights and backing plates PC Vibration Test and personally the differences seemed quite real to me. Subtle, but there. :nixweiss

Also I'm sure there was an existing thread (that got lost) where people switched from a 6" to 5" backing pad (making the CW relatively heavier) and they noticed a marked improvement.

If you want to shop around for a PC locally you just have to pick up a phone book and call up power tool stores, building supply stores, etc. It wasn't simple, but I got it for a good price this way. Good luck.

PS: I found my PC came with that funny plastic washer pre-installed on my backing pad... seems to be a spacer to make pad removal easier? :nixweiss

I've done the 6 vs 5, 6 did seem better but marginal at best.

I think it's a case of, if you can find the 6 counterweight, then by all means put it on but if you can't. I wouldn't be worried about it.

As for that little plastic spacer. I never knew what it was for, someone here posted that it was a spacer for the handle to prevent the handle from breaking.

I thought as you, that it was for the pad but I hadn't heard of anyone seeing it come mounted from Porter Cable the way you describe. Ahh, the saga continues..

I hope the search features is fixed soon...

Newbie here just picked up a 7424 locally last weekend for 175.00 plus taxes. This was at a Home Harware - their price was 198 for the 7336. Would have to order it in. They also had the Makita 7" rotary for 299.00. May sell for a lower price.

I was able to find a 5" velcro back-up pad for 10.00 at a Woodworking show in Hamilton. Not sure if they have any 6" pads but if someone wants the phone #, I gladly pass it on.

I know that I've seen similar pads at the Ancaster and Waterdown swap meets so may be able to get one there.

Have been following thus site for quite some time and appreciate the info that 4DSC, paco and others have provded.

Now that I finally have a pc, have lots of work to do on the stang.

The main distribution center is in Guelph. Try them. Also, they sometimes have a refurbished unit that costs a bit less than what you would pay retail.

Give them a ring and see what they have. Note: Look under Delta tools rather Porter Cable may help you find the call center.

I picked up my 7424 at Canadian Tire in Ottawa. I went to probably a dozen different stores. All had the price at $240 except one which had it for $199. I asked the guy why it was so much cheaper and he said that CT is not carrying the pc anymore and they're liquidating their stock and it's up to the individual stores to set the prices.

Keep an eye out at your local CT. The prices might come down when they see that they're moving fast enough.

paco is right once again. Porter Cable (Delta Int'l Machinery) head office is in Guelph. 1-519-836-2840

Kenji, try your local Home Hardware, they may be able to order the 7336 for you. Also, here is a list of Porter Cable service centers in Montreal.
