So I just spent 3 hours going over my wifes 06 Explorer with SIP & CSS white, followed by 106FF &white CSS. SIP cleared most of the scratches, did 2 passes. Left hologramming as well. Followed by 1 pass of 106FF. Topped with Wolfgang DGPS. After close inspection, there are still scratches visible. Should I have stepped to SIP on an Orange?

How bad are these scratches? Can you feel them with your finger nail? If so your not going to get them all out with out causing clear coat failure. If they are not that deep then step up to a more aggressive pad with SIP. If that doesn't work then step up to a compound like power gloss or M105 and a cutting pad.

Without a doubt, the orange pad would have done better. No reason not to use the orange pad if you're going to follow it with 106FF (but I like to finish with a finishing pad).

Update:

Hit the hood Saturday with SIP on orange, then 106FF on white, not a scratch visible. For a laugh I gave one more pass 85RD on gray. Seemed a bit smoother... Sealed with x2 DGPS 24 hours apart. Will have to post pics.

Thanks!

That extra pass with the 85RD is a good example of how burnishing/jeweling an already-OK finish really can pay off.

Glad to hear that getting more aggressive got those scratches out.

Do you usually go from SIP/orange pad > 106ff/gray pad or SIP/orange pad > 106ff/white pad > 106ff/gray pad?

Nice job on the polishing, even after the first round. Those pics, although not perfect, still look better than 98% of cars on the road today :2thumbs:.

FWIW, SIP/Orange isn't very aggressive IMO...

To get a car perfect or even close to perfect I usually have to start with a compound and a wool pad then bring the car back...

I agree. For any kind of major correction work this is usually the process.
