need a good way to create swirls

Anyone have any? I want to do some tests on abrasives and need to put swirls in a panel to test on. I want them to be realistic though (no steel wool bonet on my PC). I'm thinking maybe use that dirty wash mitt i've been using for tires and underbody stuff. Anyone have any ideas on what might cause swirls? I can test that too... 2 birds, one stone..

get one of the "100% cotton auto towels" from walmart. They come in a bag of 10 or so.

I used them my 1st time detailing and almost gave up detailing all together. I Had Zainoes, andwhile i was buffing the Z off with these towels my heart sank. My red truck was pink from swirls.

Then I found autopia and learned what caused the swirls.

Great ideas from bizzy and sam IMO. Also you may want to try washing the dirty surface (no soap) with a "peanut sponge".... it worked for my friend!

Take it to a dealer and have them wash it for you. That is sure to create swirls. :p

You could just try using a dirty wash mitt, like you say. Just don't rinse it out very well and make sure your car is dirty as hell when you clean it.

The foaming brusha the wash bays is a great idea. If you want to find out how badly various methods cause swirls, I'd be interested in seeing some of the commonly (mis)used methods like:

-Wash with synthetic wool mitt

-Wash with a kitchen sponge (with scubber side?)

-Wash without spraying down the car to get rid of large dirt particles

-Those rotary, water powered scrub wand things

-Dry with cheap cotton towels

-Too much claying, or too aggressive clay

-Don't work an aggressive polish/compound long enough

-QD when it's dirty (not just dusty)

Just a thought.

Oh, heck, sprout a pair and get out the 100 grit sand paper! :shocked

Seriously, use some #00 synthetic wool.

Since you are in Denver, how about collecting some of the sand/salt that are on the roads? Get some on a sponge, don't rinse, and wipe in circles around the surface you want to swirl.

I really like this idea

Just ask my wife to wash your car. Guaranteed results.

Equivalent to dealer workmanship, if not 'better'.
