To all the metal heads out there... how can I tell what kind of metal an object is?? stainless steel? aluminum? chrome? reg. steel? alloy? magnesium? ......??????

Would like to know. Thanks.

aluminum you can usually tell by the weight. stainless you can tell by looking at it and crome is just a plateing thate is plated over steel. I don't think you would really be able to tell alloys's without really breaking it down. Also, a magnet will tell you something about metal. It won't stick to aluminum or stainless steel. Here is you a link on magnesium. http://members.tripod.com/Mg/mggen.htm#uses

Sorry to post a question inside a question :o but except for plated coatings, when does the type of metal actually matter?

if you want something a little stronger. maybe something lighter or less expensive and corrosive. some are better conductors like copper.
