My UDM bites the dust

Hey everyone... I wanted to investigate the problem before I spoke up. I have a couple of the machines that were experiencing issues back in my hands now and have taken them apart to diagnose the problem. The issue is simply failing brushes. I'm still working to diagnose the failures (it appears the brushes may have been cracked when installed) and how to prevent it going forward. Failed polishers will be swapped on warranty.

any way to tell if the brushes are cracked on one that isn't broken yet?

just wondering because I haven't had a chance to use mine yet, but if there's a way to open it and tell if it will eventually fail, i wouldn't mind taking a look.. might save you some trouble down the road if you can spot them before they break

You're likely to do more harm than good. If it fails, it fails and we will swap it out. This is more of a testing issue for us. We need to create a better test station to detect marginal units before they do out.

David -

Kudos for you to being as dedicated, and as committed to your customers as you are. With the new Ultima line, the UDM, and your general commitment to providing quality products, knowledge, and great service -well - it's a rarity this day and age.

I've never been dissatisfied with a product or purchase. But knowing your commitment behind these products, and communicating openly all of the good - and the bad - is awesome, and from a customers point of view - is excellent. Though I know that things don't always work perfectly (what does, all the time) - the mere fact that there is good support on the other end means that I never hesitate to purchase something new, different, and never worry about the "what-ifs".

Keep up the awesome work.

Evan

And also for correction's too! Did a minor correction on some headlight's today on my replacement UDM .

It was aparent that the brushes were the problem. As I love my UDM, I think the quality of the motor needs to be reviewed. Even a new one sounds bad, vibrates, and you start smelling the motor from day one.

I had a similar issue with my UDM slowing down and started to smell cooked. I contacted Lynn and very expeditiously a replacement was sent. I can't say a single bad word about customer service. My prior unit was a 5/1/07 build date and so is my replacement.

I didn't like the vibration when using 6" pads so I started using the 5" and 4" pads with a smaller backing plate. Much less vibration and it seems to spin faster. Between a PC and the UDM I do like the UDM. However with the knowledge gained thus far a Flex wouldn't have been a bad choice either.

So far, so good with mine and I use it a lot for heavy polishing. Now that I also have a rotary, the UDM is mostly reserved for one step jobs that only need a light polish and seal.

Update:

Ever since I got my first one replaced the second one has been nothing but joy. Ive used it about 10 times since I got it back in november for many many hours and its still doing just fine. Hopefully that will be the last of the problems, but I did notice that my second machine sounded MUCH different in noise during startup and use.

Seems like there is habitual problems with these units. One reason I never buy certain products in there 1st year of production. You roll the dice that bugs will have to be worked out.

Yes you roll the dice everytime you try some new detailing product ,medicine fast food,

whatever. We are test bunnies more than we know. Believe That!

My UDM died on me a couple hours ago. it stuttered, and then shutoff, and had a burnt smell as well.

luckily i was on the last panel of the car i was doing... but i never got around to polishing the front bumper because of this. and i had to apply and remove sealant by hand. which was not fun lol.

i called autogeek because thats where i ordered it from, and but since its MLK day noone picked up. my manufacture date is also 5/1/07
