TriPinTaZ- Nice f-body, good write-up, and thanks for posting about the FinishKare stuff. I use AutoInt's version ("ABC") of the decontamination system (and yeah, I clay during the acidic step too), but I plan to try the FinishKare stuff next time since its acids are supposed to be safer for glass, etc.
You folks who haven't tried the decontamination stuff really oughta give it a try. Works a *lot* better than just claying and no, infrequent use doesn't hurt anything. Heh heh, and we worry about *Dawn* hurting stuff
I'll add to what TriPinTaZ posted about using these systems, since I've used the ABC on a few vehicles, including ones that I was *NOT* gonna screw up no matter what:
Hirosh- Ferrous deposits (little bits of iron/steel) can get on/into the paint in all sorts of ways, not just from railroad rail dust. Brake rotors come to mind. After a while, these contaminants start to rust. Clay doesn't get it all out of the paint so it comes back. Acids eat the rust away so it's really gone.
groebuck- Gloves are a good idea with this stuff, but it's not as harsh as it sounds (the ABC is supposed to be much worse than the FinishKare, and I was surprised at how mild it seemed).
Spilchy- The first ("base") step would remove that stuff, no need for the acid.
