My review of the new Zaino

Oil? What oil?:D

UPP

I don't want this to turn into a thread about Platinum and Blackfire, but I did keep meaning to address this. My blackfire does not separate like that. There isn't any oil that settles out of it. And the shine/beading last very long, so I think there must be more to the product than oil.

Well, it was a steady rain on the way home. My impressions are basically the same as before in this harder rain. Here's a shot of the rain on the car in the garage. With BF, pulling into the garage there would have been a lot less rain still on the car. Much of it would have rolled off.

P.S. No one seems to have made mention of my gratuitous use of Aurora posters in my shots! :D

Edit: One star (circle)? Ouch... :(

I was trying to figure out what engine that was in one of the posters. How do the posters hold up to the humidity in the garage? Thought about putting some up in mine but didn't want to have them wrinkle up. Instead I collected a series of porcelin signs of car marques and old gas station logos.

Well, I hear this too often, the plastic look of Zaino.

A good amount of the "look" was due to lack of control on the process of removing all the oils/silicone on a finish, and the level of shine/gloss the polished finish is prior to Zaino also has a big factor.

If oils are still present, sure Zaino will still be able to be applied, but as it cures, the oils interfere with Zaino. I've seen finishes done in this fashion with Zaino and you want to talk about looking like someone took a Saran-Wrap roll and went around the car.

Lack of high polish does not have as bad effect, just makes Zaino look flat.

So, answer has been to top Zaino with carnuba, which warms it up, but still have that Zaino protection and high shine.

Best way to test this is find a neutral color finished car, split the areas and apply the different products, then go and make your determination from that. Maybe one day I may have to try this on my company car, but it's white and it's an Escort :down

Anyway, those of us that use Zaino and like it still never shy away from a little experiment. Hell, that's how some of us found Zaino.

Regards,

Deanski

Looks good, I still think about 20% window tint and nice chrome wheels would put the icing on the Olds caKe you gpt there.....

Again nice car :)

Deanski, I don't think Aurora said anything about it looking like plastic, I think he said the opposite:

It looks very polished, however it is also incredibly reflective (not that SG isn't reflective, but not like this). I think it is this combination of the polished look and the reflection that some people call "plastic". It isn't a nice natural look for paint, sure. But it doesn't look like plastic, and it isn't sterile (it's quite the opposite).

Ok...so the term that gets thrown around a lot is "plastic-y" when describing Zaino. That certainly doesn't sound like a compliment to me either, so I understand the need for a better description of what Zaino looks like...but if someone says, "Its not quite as deep as Pinnacle, maybe its a little more flat..but its really reflective!", we can't keep on faulting the user for improper prep and application.

I think it comes down to this: Someone used Zaino one day and thought it looked like plastic on thier car...they said that, it got spread all around and now we hear it all the time (maybe too much)...but that doesn't change the fact that it looked like plastic wrap to that one guy (or gal)...and it may not of been his fault for screwing up the prep...that was just his impression.

BTW, I'm really enjoying this thread. Looking forward to more updates.

If you don't like beading, remove the nozzle off your hose, flood the paint with water, and let it sheet, prior to parking your car in the garage. How do you like the lasting Z slickness?

Aurora,

This is one of the best and most thorough reviews of any product I've ever seen.....complete with pics and detailed analysis. Thanks for taking the time and effort to share your results with us. Someone ought to tell whoever rated this thread a "1" that the rating should be based on the quality of info in the thread...and not whether or not you agree with the thread's findings. LoL

SergC, hey, you bought a new porsche!

Thanks all for the compliments. I am really enjoying trying this product out.

tcl: I haven't had any problems with the posters in the garage. They hold up fine. When the wife and I buy a house, I would definitely paint the walls and such first, as our current garage isnt' exactly attractive. But we won't be here long so I don't really see the point yet. The posters make it a bit nicer, though. That engine is an Aurora Indy V8. I wish I had some IMSA Aurora posters to go with the Indy stuff. :D

BW: Um, wouldn't I have to stand in the rain hosing my car off? Plus, if it were still raining, the car would get all beady again between when I turn the hose off and when I pull the car into the garage. Thanks for the suggestion, though. Also, the Z has only been on the car two weeks, so I can't speak to the lasting slickness yet. I'll check it out when I wash it, though. Hopefully I'll have time this weekend. But after two weeks with no QD'ing or wash, the car is as reflective as the day I applied it.

Redcar GUY: Ha ha, we must be opposites about wheels. I always liked your car with the painted aluminum 5-spokes. I really like the aluminum look. I think I'd only want chrome on a black or white car. I also already have all the benefits of tint without the tint. The Aurora (like many GM's) has Solar-Ray glass all around (including the sunroof) that blocks out >98% of UV and >50% of radiant heat. You need to post some more picts of your sweet car! I'm like in SS withdrawl. I guess I should go browse your gallery for a fix. You need to get a clip of that thing accelerating. I'd love to hear that LT-1 booming through those SLP sewer pipes!

Deanski: Sometimes I'm not quite sure if I'm reading your posts right. It sounded sort of like an aside about the plastic look. Or do you think I didn't prep properly for the Zaino? I think I performed a fair test and set up a good surface for the Z. I didn't Dawn, but I just won't wash my car with that, and still don't think it would add anything to the process. But I'd be glad to hear your thoughts on it. I also don't think the car looks plasticy, and certainly doesn't look like it has Saran Wrap on it. :wavey

Great review Aurora40!

The one thing i found absent from this whole thread was the amount of dust that seems to accumulate on the Zaino finish. I had it on my car last winter for the protection, and will likely apply it again this year. When in the protection mode, i'm not all that worried about the perfect shine, as the paint goes through snow, salt, slush, etc. on a regular basis.

Have you noticed more dust on the car as opposed to your Blackfire and other products?

Once again, 5/5 on your review!

Cheers

ryeh20 (is that like rye water or something?), I can't really say too much about dust. I guess I don't really notice that too much. Some days the car gets extra dusty and some days it doesn't. I always just figure the pollen count is high or I parked somewhere dusty or the ceiling is falling apart in the garage or something.

I can say that the car isn't suddenly so dusty that I've noticed a difference. I don't know if that helps a whole lot... :nixweiss

I can also say that my car stayed generally cleaner with Blackfire on it. Looking at it today, the car is totally dirty from the rain. With Blackfire, it would be surprisingly clean after a day of driving in rain.

I noticed the same with EX. Car stayed cleaner after driving in the rain ( less residue). But with Zaino when the car was dirty it appeared cleaner. Hope that makes any sense?

Good review Aurora 4.0. I am with you about after-market chrome wheels ( even those of stock design). RedCar's look great because they are stock. Too many low lifes add that flash around here. $2000 wheels on a $5000 car. :nixweiss. Chrome wheels appear nice now but in 2 years they will not be in vogue and appear dated. The aftermarket world (dealers) will make sure of that. Stock always rules in the classic car world. :wavey

P.S. I finally ordered some Meg's FI from CMA.

Hey, did you mean FD? I look forward to hearing your experience with it.

You need to post more pictures too! You gotta get a better camera first, though. ;) :wavey

I thought you were using Final Inspection as your daily / routine QD. Are you using FD?

I did a quick search of the web and FD is extremely hard to find :o. I am sure if I tried hard enough I could locate some.

Yeah, I use Final Detail. I have Final Inspection, but don't really use it much. It's nice, but not really stand-out. The main thing I like is that I can use it before applying some sealant without worrying about bonding. But Final Detail is the stuff I use like crazy. I just don't use it when I'm gonna layer something.

I didn't think CMA carried FD... Fortunately a local place carries the Detailer line. Otherwise I'm not sure what I'd do. It's probably a fortune to ship. If you have a local Meg's dealer, they may be able to get it in for you. The place I buy from didn't carry the Detailer line until I got them to order some APC+ and Engine Kote for me.

Thanks Aurora 4.0, There goes more money!!! ;). I will check with my local automotive paint supplier and see if he will get some with his next order.

Hey Ali (AlBoston) are there any places in the Greater Boston Area the sells Meg Final Detail over the counter? I could get my brother to pick some up and have his wife ( works for FedEX) ship it here. free.

Aurora40- Just wanted to add MY thanks for this thread. Very well done. Please keep up updated. Most of the regulars here know that I am not a Zaino user, but threads like this sometimes get me thinking...:o

Hmm, that's not really what I noticed. With Zaino, the car was actually quite dirty, and it looked quite dirty. With Blackfire, the car wasn't very dirty, and looked totally clean. Maybe it's different for different colors, or maybe Blackfire does even better at this than EX?

I washed the car Saturday, then had to drive Sunday on wet roads that hadn't dried from the day before (stupid humidity...). So I washed the car again on Sunday. Both times with #00, which was great. The car was super shiny again afterwards. This morning I hit the car with some Final Detail, and that worked great. It was just like using it on Blackfire or Souveran or anything else I've used it on. It added a nice gloss and slickness. Doesn't seem to have hurt the reflection at all, but I haven't looked at it that much. Plus, it's fairly overcast.

My current thinking is that I'll try out a coat of Z2 soon and see how I like that. But if it doesn't change the beading behavior (which I don't think it will) then I will likely try a coat of Blackfire once I've had time to adjust to the Z2. I just really like how Blackfire beads. Hopefully this will result in the same high reflection of the Zaino, but maybe with a bit more "pop" of the metallic and with better beading/slickness. I'll be sure to update this with the Z results, and maybe start a new thread if I put BF on top.
