So how did you vote Charles?
The poll is multiple choice.
Mine were:

I don't know anything and don't think I can be of any help

I'm concerned that I will get in trouble for posting about a product that isn't sold by one of the vendors

I just prefer to lurk

FWIW, I feel I have seen all of the things in the poll choices happen and have had several former posters mention to me that some of the other choices were their reason for moving on.

For instance:

I'm concerned that I will get in trouble for posting about a product that isn't sold by one of the vendors

I have received less than an enthusiastic welcome

I have been accused of Spamming

I'm concerned that I will get in trouble for posting about a product that isn't sold by one of the vendors

I make a real effort to not make people feel that way. There has been product promotion on here that was not legit which has to be addressed for the good of the forum as well as protecting the vendors.

Proof is in the pudding though. Right now there is a thread running about Pro products. There is another thread running telling everyone that they can get Collinite cheaper somewhere other than our vendors. If DC was really that exclusive would I let these threads run?

I have received less than an enthusiastic welcome

Don't understand why someone would say this either unless they start off talking about this great product or machine they use. We have plenty of members on here that welcome new members.

I have been accused of Spamming

Not by me unless it's obvious or I have proof.

I had only been posting on DC for a few weeks when I posted how well I like AW and some insinuated that I was a shill pushing DG products.
Many would have left to never return.

What was funny some tried it and now many praise it.:)

At some point reading about how to polish you car becomes boring.

Overall DC is the best place for a newbie to learn but perhaps we could ALL do a better job of helping them.

One site that I never go to anymore has several beta tester for Sal and if anyone mentions how happy they are with product XXX they all jump in and tell him that stuff is junk you should use Zaino.

It don't take long to get a belly full of that so their are a lot of things that will pull a site down.

MOL is great if you want info on their product but other brands are not discussed.

I don't think anyone product has the ultimate for all things, { Sorry Steve } while 1 line of products will do a good job I prefer to use several and only DC allows a discussion about all products.

I can only speak for myself but one more post about how great PB-S&W works has no interest to me.
I use it and know how great it is so I don't need to be reminded daily.

To keep people coming back to a site I think it needs something to hold their attention and after reading 100 posts on how to use a certain product I louse interest.

What we need is for Steve to come up with some new products for us to test.

So to sum up you will not find a better site then DC

:dcrules

it can't be :D:mad: guess I'll have to work harder:lol2:

don't worry there are a few in the works ;)
especially some with you in mind :notme:

It's good that you do, but not everyone agrees with you. I think the "protecting the vendors" hits the nail on the head for the hesitancy of some people.

It would take more patience than I have, but this has happened several times and without any reference to brands of products by the poster.
The BMW, Big Money Wasted thread comes to mind immediately, but several have occurred. The "How long to detail a car" would be another one that jumps out at me. Bryan's Home Made wax is another. This has nothing to do with the content of the post, just the way it was responded to.

I don't know the specifics, but it happens often on the forum and is sometimes followed up by a PM to "watch themselves". (At least that's what I was told)

Hey, I'm not trying to start an argument, but we do need to look at how we sometimes come across to new or even old members.
Unfortunately, I have to take my share of the blame as well.

........Here is the honest truth about why I am not always posting about detailing. It's not my passion......focus.....

I have a similar fault (personality?) I find a new interest/hobby, and I'm gung-ho for 1/2/3 or so years. I read, study, get involved, spend a not-so small fortune on equipment/supplies, and get good enough at whatever it is at the time to be far better than the average bear but not as superb as others who have been passionate about current interest/hobby for a longer time and have stuck with it.
Then, my interest slowly starts to wane. The forums, the posts, magazines, etc, all (it seems to me) to start repeating what was discussed/advised/published in the past. Instead of studying/participating/purchasing, I start skimming posts/articles till my interest starts to fade slowly like a dying ember.
I then move onto something else, and repeat the cycle, ad infinitum/nauseum.
My interest before detailing was guitar playing, for instance. I have numerous guitars, amps, pedals, cords, digi this & that, mixers, mics, loads of looseleaf books I made about the craft, etc. I MUST HAVE the latest/greatest flavor of the month product. I attend seminars, shows, etc.
Before that was blues harmonica. Again, I accumulated harmonicas, lessons, blah blah. Before that...before that...before that....
I achieve skills/knowledge much greater than the hoi polloi, then my focus starts to.....slowly unravel.
I just finished putting together a looseleaf book re: detailing, and I'm hoping that's not the kiss of death for my detailing enthusiasm.
Just the way I am.

who would this be other than spammers? and a few OTC users? AG carries virtually 90% of the available products on the market...and if there was no protection of the sponsors at all..do you really think DC would have sponsors? we don't need the drama's that happens over at Autopia ..isn't that why many of us are here?

again this is the rare occasion and Bryan does own a web site that sells wax and he has been given a lot of rope by Troy

as Dwayne once told me if it looks like spam, it usually is :inspector: and as Troy said if they come in blazing about the newest and greatest in their first few posts with links, then the members who have been here will usually send a notice to moderators or Troy

I know what you are talking about.
I enjoy working on my car to make it faster \ Stop quicker \ corner harder

I like to go fast but I want to look good while doing it. :D

While AG does carry a lot of products, they don't carry them all. Zaino for example. (I am not a Zaino User) And what is wrong with OTC products? Many of them are good enough to be carried by the mentioned AG.
Regardless of the discussion, there are several that don't feel comfortable posting about non vendor items.

Not all that rare if you do some research.
While Bryan does have a web site, I don't see any wax for sale. Bryan's Web Store

Or jump on the poster about Spam whether it be the case or not.
How it looks to one person isn't necessarily how it looks to another.

I just checked and we have 16 members and 41 guest.
If you watch it you will see that a lot of people are browsing this site but not members.

I may be wrong but I think that DC has more members that really know how to make a car look good and that may be intimidating to a newbie.

They come to read and learn but do not become a member and participate in the forum.
If I'm right I don't know how we go about curing that other than try harder to make new member feel welcome here.

I'm a mod at a forum called sprintusers
right now the stats are
Currently Active Users: 1511 (129 members and 1382 guests)

So the stats pointed out by Bart arent worrisome.

It also doesn't help the site to have members hiding their name as on-line ... currently it say there are 16 members on line yet only 14 appear ... so what's with that:confused:

Who does that? Dang spies! Let's call em' out, get a rope. Some of them even make quite a few posts.

I guess being a sponsor has it's privileges because one time I posted a link to a non sponsor site and Steve removed it and now he did the same thing. :passout:

This guy could be sued everyone knows Poorboy makes the worlds best wax
