My initial Wolfgang review

Is just a tease for now. I washed my tires, wheels, and wheelwells last week with the hose and normal stuff, then I QEW'd the car. I find this works well because I can flush the underbody and really clean the wheels and stuff, but I don't have water dripping out of body seams for hours after. It won't make regular washing obsolete for me, but it is a nice way to do it. I was all poised to do my Wolf session, but couldn't find where the PC had been packed!

The Aurora has not been moved from the garage since last weekend as it has been rainy and also I had removed the airbox to wrap in Reflectix. So I just went over the car with the original Wolfgang QD (the super strong smelling one) and after I eat lunch I will hit the car with DACP and a polishing pad, Wolfgang polish, and Wolfgang protectant all by PC. The car has some light marring from my QEW stupidity on the hood (the sponge didn't have very much water in it, I should have known better, but the hood looked so clean in the first place... :o) and after a winter I think DACP is just a better step to start with.

I decided not to clay because the paint feels very smooth. It doesn't feel warranted.

The QD that I used was the first one that was sent out, and I figured since the car is completely clean that I'd use this stuff up a bit instead of the newer stuff. I was very put-off by the smell of it in the bottle, but in the garage with the door open, it really isn't overpowering, though it isn't subtle. Seeing as how this stuff got replaced for poor performance, I figured it probably won't do much more than just some final cleaning of the surface. But to my surprise it worked very nicely. It is very easy to use, it doesn't haze easily (any QD will haze if you buff it off poorly) and was easy to buff. Also, it seemed to add some reflectivity and it definitely made the paint feel smoother and slicker. More of a smooth kind of slick than a greased-pig kind of slick. It did a nice job. It reminded me of Z6 (performance-wise), though I've only used that a few times. The smell was actually pleasant, though not by any means my favorite. My wife, as usual, commented that the garage smelled nice, though she also thought it smelled like a body spray.

I am really looking forward to trying out the Wolf today, and I will report back on my experiences with it. Hopefully I'll have some pictures, though they will probably not be optimal lighting picts. :wavey

Nice review Aurora40, different from the regular ones. I completely agree with you on the QD. I'm sure it was replaced cause people didn't like the smell, nothing else. There's no bad performance coming from it. The new one, I'm sure is the same product with a different sent added.

Alright, I just finished doing exactly what I outlined previously. The DACP did a nice job on the paint and left it squeaky clean. Paint is plastic from what I understand, and after using DACP or SFP, you can believe it more. It has a sort of squeaky plasticy feel, but feels very clean.

After DACP with a polishing pad (which on my car is actually quite a mild polishing, more what I expected SFP to be. A cutting pad sure kicks it up a notch, though) I hit the car with the Wolfgang Pre-Polish cleaner again on a polishing pad by PC. It was very easy to apply, didn't create any dusting, and buffed off very easily. It turned the squeaky paint into much slicker paint, and it seemed to add some gloss and depth to the finish. I was very pleased with this product. It is very easy to use, and does have some respectable cleaning power to use on a car in nice shape. I might use this in place of SFP in the future. I then went over the car by hand with a foam pad to get all the areas the PC doesn't get, and I had no problem getting off small bits of tar and such on the lower rockers, though a bit of elbow grease is required. This is as it should be IMO for this type of cleaner, but I'm glad it has a little bit of muscle instead of being just a glaze.

I then applied the protectant by PC with a finishing pad. It was incredibly easy to apply. It reminds me a lot of Zaino in how runny it is and how well it spreads. It took a bit more product initially to prime the PC pad than Blackfire does, but after doing the roof and hood, I was using it just as sparingly as I use Blackfire. It is definitely in the same neighborhood as Zaino and Blackfire when it comes to amount used. The number of applications one could get from a bottle would probably rival that of paste waxes.

I did the whole car and then let it sit maybe 15+ minutes before buffing. It was a cinch to buff, all I had to do was wipe the whole car. Hardly anything extra was needed. And man was it slick! The paint felt very smooth and slick. Again, it was a lot like Zaino in the smoothness/slickness. Blackfire is much more slick slick than smooth slick. My hands always get chapped to varying degrees when doing this kind of detail, so it's always hard to make definitive comparisions of slickness, but this was certainly quite slick.

The appearance is a bit darker, and it does seem to have good gloss and depth, and very nice reflections. So far, it reminds me a lot of Blackfire. However, my opinions on the look of a product always form over a period of time. But so far it looks very nice.

The smell... Here's something that really put me off when I first got the stuff. But I'll tell you, I'm warming up to it. It does smell nice when you are working with it vs. sticking your nose in the bottle. It is a bit of an unusual smell for a detailing product, but it's not bad at all. NXT has a cologne type smell, but for some reason, it always smells strong and I can always smell it. With the Wolf, you don't really notice it after a little bit. :nixweiss I still have to give my all-time smell props to the QD's of Crystal Mist, Blackfire, and Final Inspection. My garage smells incredible after them.

I'm also warming up to the name... At first I thought it was a really really lame name for a detailing product, but now that "Wolfgang" makes me think of the product rather than of some pompous euro-trash art lover, it's actually a pretty cool name. Plus, it can have a cool nickname like "the Wolf"... :xyxthumbs

Here are some shots I took. Please excuse the missing lower grill inserts in front, I'm not quite done for the day. Also note, this is the darkening effect of sundown, not of Wolfgang... :D

I'm sure smell was a big factor. I thought I read Wolfgang found it affected the performance, but maybe not. The newer stuff has a less strong smell, but you're right, it also smells different, not just less strong. The stuff I used sure seemed good, though. :nixweiss

Oh, I used Meguiar's PC and foam pads, AutoFiber MF's, and Endurance on the tires. I need to Klasse the wheels again sometime soon. And that last product reflection shot didn't really turn out as great as I thought it would... :(

Looks like your car turned out real nice!

I've had WG a few weeks now, and even after a couple of washes, the paint still feels very slick. Keep us posted on your impressions down the road.

Thanks for the review. I also just detailed my 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee with WG. I will write my impressions in the next couple to days.

Well, I drove the Nissan to work today because the forecast called for some sprinkles. That never happened. Since the Aurora is still all perfect, I decided to Z12 the glass and then Blackfire it. The whole time I just couldn't get over how sharp the car looks. This is in the garage under incandecent lights. So I can only imagine what it'll look like in the sun. :D

Oh as an aside, I used the Z12 with a damp Zaino terry app. Man this works great! At first you use kind of a bit of Z12, but then it spreads forever and you don't use any more! I really like Z12.

Also as an aside, my garage, while no means an ultimate garage candidate (it's too small) is also by no means complete. I want to put in at least 6, preferrably 9, 4' double flourescents (I have 4 to put up currently). And I would like to cover the floor, finish the drywall on the walls and put up trim around the floor and doors, and then paint it properly. I'd also paint the ceiling and the garage doors.

Anyway, I snapped two picts because the car just looked sooo good. The picts suck because it's in a garage with two incandescent lights... But too bad:

Well, I drove the car around today for the first time. Man, it sure felt good to drive it. The view down the hood was very glossy and red. :) I continue to be impressed by just how smooth the car feels, I really have to stop myself from touching it. Maybe I need to get some painted scrap panel so I can Wolf it and touch it to my hearts content... ;)

So far, to me the look is sort of somewhere between the very high shine, low gloss look of Zaino and the glossy metallic look of Blackfire. The Wolfgang has that nice gloss and incredible shine, but I haven't quite seen that metallic pop I get with Blackfire yet. However, being between Zaino and Blackfire is a pretty darn good place to be IMO... And I think Wolfgang has a more natural look than either Blackfire or Zaino did on my car. Though, I've only seen it today so my opinion is quite likely to change... ;)

As far as durability, it can easily withstand one week in the garage... :rofl :p I have a feeling I'll be applying more coats to it as it was just soooo easy, so I kind of doubt I'll get to test the durability to any great extreme. Hopefully my car won't get caught in any downpours either, but I'm sure sooner or later I'll get to see the beading in action (one of my biggest enjoyments/peeves about a product, and one I rarely get to experience anymore anyway... :( :))

I took a couple of sunnier shots, sorry they are a little on the big side (less than 1000 pixels in any direction, though) but when I shrunk them further they just didn't seem as powerful.

I hope this stuff looks good on red :)..

What color do you think this is?? (said in accent of parking garage attendant in Ferris Bueler's Day Off)

I know what you mean, though, you mean red red, not dark metallic red. And judging from your picts, the answer is "darn good"...

Aurora40...Nice write-up. Nice clean reflections.

I still haven't gotten a chance to use the free WG kit I got free. It is still in it's original packaging all wrapped up.

Who knows when I will be able to try it out. :D But it sure looks nice sitting on my shelf...hehehe

Practice with it on your lawn tractor or washing machine. Within minutes of finishing, you will be doing one of your vehicles!

How about a surfboard? :bounce j/k

I'm sooooo busy that there isn't enough time in the day. Actually, I have been asked to do a full detail on a 2001 Toyota Corolla next month in May. So I will use that vehicle as my test bed.

My full detail as outlined will be:

Exterior:

Swirl and light scratch removal

Polish

Top it off with sealant

Clean and dress tires and trim

Interior:

Vaccuum

Clean & Dress interior vinyl (:( no leather)

*No engine cleaning

All for $150.00 :D Not bad for a 2-3 hour job on a compact. I"ll be using a PC.

Well, I've been driving my car in the rain this week because I was curious about the Wolfgang beading. It beads very well, but doesn't dispatch water as quickly as Blackfire does. It's again, sort of halfway between Zaino and BF. The water beads up really well, but they kind of sit there until you really get going quickly. Then they start to move off the paint, though they don't really fly off.

I've used both QD's a little bit, and they seem pretty similar. The old one seems just like the new one but maybe a bit more watered down. The new one is more likely to streak and such as a result. I think the smell of the new one and the performance of the old one might be the best. I don't like QD's where you just use a tad. Because then I worry about scratching and such. I'd rather it be watered down a bit more and the price reduced to reflect that than to buy some QD where one spritz is all you need for a whole panel or else it'll streak. :nixweiss

I agree it takes some speed to get the water flowing. I've been thinking about topping it with s100 because the water just flys off it and the car is dry in only a few minutes.

I only have the 'old' QD, and it's my favorite QD, even over Zaino!

It looks great and restores the slickness on Zaino, WG and EX-P surfaces. Too bad they changed it more than the sent.

Just got the WG polish/sealant along with a few SURBUFF pads to try.. Now if it would stop raining!

I hear that topping WG sealant with Souveran is just killer! Since I now have both, I'll give it a try on the SC430.

I need to remove some minor spider webs, light swirls with some Mez FP and will try some Carpolish FP.

These SURBUFF pads look interesting, we shall see! Gotta stop touching these pads...

Weather should be better this weekend.

Regards,

Deanski
