My first PC!! I think i'm going to have a lot of questions.....

my pc and edge 2k pads arrived finally premiumautocare.com after some issues with UPS and customs. Just as a note to any fellow canadians, go with USPS. Luckily Dwayne has been incredibly helpful and my gear has arrived.

now I'm trying to familiarize myself and reading through as many posts as I can to learn a few basics with how to start.

The first thing that I noticed was the noise of the PC. I was expecting a quieter machine, there seems to be quite a bit of a rattling sound when its spinning but I'm assuming that its normal unless anyone disagrees.

Second, the PC comes equipped with the 5" counterweight and I'm trying to switch it with the 6" that was included. Under the 5" weight is a black rubber thingy that sticks up a few millimeters. The 5" weight has a notch in the middle that this piece of rubber sits inside, but the 6" weight has no notch. Can I cut this rubber off with a blade or is this not advised? If I try screwing the weight down over top of this it will leave a large gap on each side of the centre.

Any links to tips and guides to using the PC will also be greatly appreciated!

I am guessing you turned the PC on with or without the pad to get a feel for it. it will get quit down a little when you use on or against a portion of the car.

I did try the PC with a pad on, it was the same noise as when it was off. Perhaps against a surface the noise will change.

As for the plastic object sticking out, has anyone tried cutting this off or filing it down with a dremel before mounting the 6" counterweight?

Just wondering why you want to put in the 6" counter weight? Do you have a 5" or 6" backing plate?
 
I've read in previous posts here that people prefer the 6" weight with the Edge 2K pads. It was also included in the PC package deal that Dwayne sent so I was assuming it was the correct one to use.

I see I was just wondering because I will be getting my pc soon and wondered if I should go with the 5" or 6" . I was told from porter cable mine will come with the 5" but I can order the 6" which they did recomend with a 6" pad. Hope you get you other question amswered good luck detailing.

once you use on the surface of your car the PC will balance out.If you think its bad with a dry pad wait until you clean your pads and the use the pPC to spin'em out. It will quiet down when use it and less vibration too.

Well I ended up screwing down the 6" counterweight and the rubber piece simply compressed until the plate was flush to the metal. That part is solved, but I've been thinking this thing will make me deaf if I try using it on an entire car! On setting #6 it sounds like a freakin bandsaw!

So I took the PC over to the local porter cable service shop and the tech agreed, we even compared it to another PC and it was much quieter. Apparently it will work the way it is, but they're going to get me a replacement unit in a couple weeks.

So I'll try working with earplugs for now, good thing I didn't leave it and assume the noise was normal.
 
Good stuff.
Always work with ear plugs anyway. I try to use mine everytime, even when doing a little touch up. I enjoy music and laughter and my wife reminding me about my dirty socks too much to detail without ear plugs.
