This was my first detailing of a dark car. Overall I like how it came out, but know theres room for improvement. Looking for constructive criticism.

Process:

Wash (dawn/kaio)

Clay (only where I could feel it was needed)

Polish - Menzerna IP w/compounding pad at speeds 3.5 -5 via PC

Polish - Menzerna Final Polish w/polishing pad at speeds 4-6 via PC

Polish - Klasse AIO w/ polishing pad at speed 4

Sealant - Jeff Werkstatt Acrylic Jet Trigger (AJT) by hand

over a hundred views and no comments? guess I didn't do as decent a job as I thought... Open to constructive criticism on how I could might make this better.

Also curious as to whether you guys think the after pictures could be improved upon with a wax over the sealant.

Don't be personally offended... With myself, with so many C&B posts, I often don't post any responses after viewing unless there's something that is uniquely surprising.

It looks like you did an awesome job, eliminating all the water spots. Good job :)

Looks very nice!!! Excellent work on a beautiful car. :goodjob

One suggestion: next time around, you may try substituting a good carnauba wax for your KAIO and A-JT. Something like Natty's Blue/Red or S100. I think one of those waxes would really make your black paint pop and look dripping wet. That's what makes this a fun hobby, trying different combos and enjoying the results.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Bigfoot,

Is there a rule of thumb to taking pictures that might be more revealing so as to invite better constructive criticism? I was trying to show some rock chips on the front bumper that wouldn't really come up in these pictures. I feel like the finish is really nice overall, but the blemishes may be a little highlighted.

mikebai,

No offense taken. Thanks for chiming in. I'm on Long Island too, btw.

Thor!,

I was thinking exactly along those lines. I know people often use carnubas after KAIO, and I was wondering if the same could be done after a dedicated sealant.

I was looking into purchasing some Natty's Red to slop on top of the AJT--possibly next weekend. Will this lead to a weird effect over an acrylic sealant or should it be fine?

To be truthful--the only waxes I've dealt with were turtle waxes by hand before I knew what I was doing.

In all honesty the pics weren't as striking as the car likely was in person. That may have been the cause. Thanks for taking the time to post!

Gopher,

While the car looks alot better, it has the potential to look even better than that. YOur process included the right steps, but I see a few errors with it.

Wash (dawn/kaio)

Clay (only where I could feel it was needed)-Clay the whole car.

Polish - Menzerna IP w/compounding pad at speeds 3.5 -5 via PC-You should always compound at speed 6 to properly let the compound break down. Do slow, over lapping passes, moving at a rate of about 1 inch/second till the polish begins to dust or is almost transparent.

Polish - Menzerna Final Polish w/polishing pad at speeds 4-6 via PC- Keep it at 6!!

Polish - Klasse AIO w/ polishing pad at speed 4

Sealant - Jeff Werkstatt Acrylic Jet Trigger (AJT) by hand

Hope this helps, and I'm just trying to help. Other than that, it looks better than 99% of cars I see on the road!

Thanks for the tip. I won't be lazy about claying next time... Just takes so darn long to complete/is the least fun part for me. :)

I'm very much a newbie to detailing and based those polishing speeds on what I'd read in guides on autogeek/proper autocare. I'll definitely use 6 for those steps in the future. This car is likely to be replaced with a 997 in the near future, so I probably won't go through the process again on it. I do have another black car to do along with that forest green Land Rover (I'm dreading the truck) in those pictures... We'll see how they come out with the additional steps.

You should be fine with the Natty's over the A-JT. I'm sure you will witness some major "pop" in the paint.

The flip side of this is that you probably should not then apply a future coat of A-JT (synthetic sealant) over the Natty's as you may experience bonding issues.

thanks a lot, Thor! I was waiting for an answer before I purchased some. I should be fine with one layer of ajt--the car really only leaves the garage maybe 2x a week and never in bad weather conditions, so durability wise I should be fine.

Looking forward to seeing what a high quality wax will do. I'll add pictures when I do (hopefully next weekend).
