My first and LAST experience with Adam's products

I was on the 370z site and there are always guys pushing their products on every site which I understand... even if it is with mostly beginners they always promote their product as the end all be all.

So Adam's was having a Father's Day sale 15% off... I wanted to get a drying towel and thought i'd go ahead and take advantage of the sale.

I put all of my info in and the towel was 22.50... ok cool. I go to shipping and find out that the shipping is 10.50! For a single towel really?

I told one of their reps that their shipping prices are outrageous... I got this quoted back to me...

"We don't dictate the shipping charges, its calculated by FedEx using a program that runs on the background of our website, but considering we're in Colorado and you're in Maryland it doesn't seem that far fetched to me.

Gas prices continue to go up and FedEx's rates have increased accordingly, unfortunately. if you'd like to order JUST a drying towel give us a call (866)965-0400 and we can use something like a USPS priority flat rate box for you, but I believe it will still be around $7 even for that."

Actually he is incorrect USPS has the if it fits it ships for 5.00 flat. So I got on ebay and found a Cobra waffle weave towel for 3.89 shipping and bought that.

I'm sorry but that to me is just stupid... people are lured into paying more for shipping when they only need or want one thing... either way I won't be buying any adam's products myself.

Have you mailed something via Fed Exp yourself? The minimum shipping charge is usually $9 and it goes up fast with distance. You can go to the fed exp site with an estimate package size and figure it out yourself but I suspect it will be close.

Now, I do not believe Adam's actually pays the quoted price (or not at least in the end). Businesses with contracts get significant discounts on rates. That is, if they meet certain volume over a certain time period, they may get a kick back. However, some can argue they still have to cover expenses for the carton, labeling, packing the box, etc. if not buried in the product prices.

Why don't they show actual shipping costs? The contracts are confidential information and Fed Ex does not want consumers or competitors know easily what they are really charging easily since it can change. It is a game (common business practice).

The company I work for uses UPS as the contract carrier and the discounts are substantial. When we create the shipping invoice we see retail and then actual. This is a typical business setup...high volume users get discounts. I think many sellers doing free shipping are not really sacrificing as much as some think.

I never paid much attention to shipping costs until my wife made a big deal about some place we both order from. Once I started paying attention I realized that it really *can* add up! Been using USPS flat-rate a lot more than I ever did before, and appreciating it when vendors do the "free shipping" promotions.
