Murphy's oil soap?

Has anyone used this to wash thier car? It lists it one of the uses on the back of the bottle and it got me thinking... It's a pretty gentle soap and i love the smell, it's also pretty slick.

I don't know how clean it would rinse though. It also might have a lot of lye in it or other high pH things. Has anyone tried it or other vegtable oil based soaps?

Oil soap was used in the 1920s to wash the then color varnish paint used on cars back then . I would think that it would still work, but there are a lot of car soaps out their. Murphy oil soap is also good on cleaning interior vinyl and leather. I think that you would be better off with regular car wash soap.

Stick with car wash soap or shampoo's for you exterior paint.

As lawrencea suggested it works good on the interior .:xyxthumbs

I'd agree with Rollman...

Murphy's label it says "pure vegetable oil soap". So you put vegetable oil soap in water then wash the vehicle, when the water evaporates you are left with a coating of vegetable oil. The idea of washing a vehicle is to clean them not coat them with vegetable oil soap residue.

I saw a post here that said it worked well for cleaning foam pads.

And it does :)

Which is why I wouldn't use it to wash the car. The stuff will dissolve heavy amounts of wax out of an applicator pad...what do you think it will do to a micro-thin layer on a car's surface? A light Murphey's/water mix should be mild enough for interior vinyl though.

Actually, Murphy's Oil Soap contains NO OIL. It is a pottasium soap derived from oil. It should be harmless for interior cleaning.

(quote from Wikipedia)Despite the name, oil soap does not contain oil; it contains potassium soap manufactured from vegetable oil. The other constituents of Murphy's Oil Soap are sodium EDTA, propylene glycol, fragrance, surfactants, and water.[1]

My initial experimentation with it shows that it works well mixed in a pump bottle as a spray and wipe exterior cleaner QD and it evaporates quickly leaving a clean surface.

Based on this experience I believe that it may hold promise as an inexpensive rinseless wash. I hope to do some further testing.
