Most commonly encountered detailing misinformation??

Rotarys should be used at 3000 rpms to get the job done faster.

And that they are meant to get the job done quickly in general.

 Yeah, that seems to be the mentality of many dealer "swirl and hologram departments" :(

People often put to much importance on "bonding issues". I have never had a bonding issue and I have tried 100's of combinations. I have even tried sealant over nuba a couple times on lazy days and improved the water beading as if the sealant was on well prepped surface.

Rotary's are dangerous and if your not careful you will burn the paint. It's been my experience that you have to try to burn the paint to do so. Obviously you don't want to operate Rotary at max speed, but if you follow the basics you will never burn paint.

With all the latest commonly encountered mis-information and mis-conceptions:

- All petroleum distillates and silicones are harmful to paint

- Clay bars induce scratches

- You can only polish a car a few times before abading away the clear (have you ever seen wet sanding!)

- Dawn is a great car wash

- People washing their cars in the sun on the hottest, sunniest days

- People rinsing their cars with water at the Coin ops, then using a dirty old chamois to scratch it (dry it)

- (Properly done) claying removes any LSP

- "New" cars don't (ever) need polishing

- Repaints can't be polished, or even washed, right away

- Repaints are ready to wax right away

- That polishing, waxing and even compounding are best done by hand

- The belief that once a year use of a store bought carnauba wax is adequate protection against the elements

- People using regular bath towels (or whatever they have around) to dry their car

- The existence of "pure" natural "white carnuaba from secret young plants in Brazil that even botanist do not know about

- That a single Dawn wash will ruin a vehicle's finish, seals, etc

- That all sealants are created equally

- That all microfiber towels are created equally

- 100% Cotton Diapers are the best thing to use on your car

- Waxing clearcoats removes paint

- That you don't need to dress interior/external vinyl or leather

- Forgetting to dress weatherstripping and/or clean door jambs

- Leaving bras on cars during wet weather is good

- Leaving bras on cars for extended periods of time is a good idea

- All random orbitals are the same

- Trying to remove bugs or above surface contaminants during the wash process by rigoursly scrubbing

- Forgetting to clean the wheel wells

- Waxing rims doesn't make a difference

- Anyone can use a rotary buffer

- Sponges are the best thing to wash cars with

- A Porter Cable random-orbital buffer can not correct paint defects

- You can not harm paint using a Porter Cable random-orbital buffer

- Rotary buffers should be used at 3000 rpms to get the job done faster

- Rotary buffers are used to get the job done quickly in general

- Nu Finish is the best, longest lasting car wax in the world

- The paint on new cars is very tough and doesn't need to be waxed

- Modern clearcoats are hard to scratch

- Porter Cable Polishers are idiot proof

- Too much importance placed on "bonding issues"

- Rotary buffers are dangerous and you will burn the paint easily

Keep 'em comin people. This should be one heck of a quick reference resource when we're done :xyxthumbs

- Using old baby diapers is the best way to polish

-Swirls are a sign of a clean car

-Golden Gallon car wash is just as good as the rest

Most people dont realize that synthetic waxes that impart high shine and are exceptional at filling swirls, are usually laden with cheap silicones.

Most of the common car washes contain synthetic wax that create shine and beading, giving people the impression that their wax seems to last forever.

Misinformation:

1st to top the list is: Armor All is still bad and will lead to vinyl and rubber failure.

2nd is using any dish soap on a vehicle is okay.

3rd - Using Windex on your windows is the best.

4th - Using newspaper to clean windows is best. Besides the messy ink factor, I have yet to find how it is superior to using a MF and an automotive glass cleaner i.e. 20/20, Invisible Glass etc.

5th - Automotive sealant packages offered by the dealer that offer 3-5 yr protection. NO WAY.

6th - Teflon as an addive to detailing products makes a difference! NOT.

7th - Using Mop and Glow to shine up the engine.

8th - Last but not least, Armor all will damage your tires and vinyl. Yes, I've repeated it twice :)

"the belief that you can't harm paint using a PC. You can. "

It's true, it's true...I dropped a PC on the hood and it damaged the paint :o

The whole concept of detailing. Real detailing is more than a wash, polish and wax. It really means getting into to all the nocks and crannies which many times means dis-assembly of parts of the vehicle (seats, lights, rug removal, Q-tips or brushes for vents, etc.).

Using newspaper to clean windows is best. Besides the messy ink factor, I have yet to find how it is superior to using a MF and an automotive glass cleaner i.e. 20/20, Invisible Glass etc.

I actually have not found a method that works as well as newspaper. I use some glass MFs now that work ALMOST as well, but not as well. I use rubber gloves when using newspaper and the ink is a non-issue.

Misinformation #1) Zaino is the ONLY LSP worth using,

and

Misinformation #2) Everyone who uses Zaino has been brainwashed.

BOTH are wrong. People use Z because it gives them great results. People don't use Z because something else gives them great results.

I'm going to give it a try myself, if there is ever a nice day when I'm not working.
