GTR has not lived up to the hype....the cars that were made available for magazine testing were not stock.. NOONE even porsche drivers have been able to reproduce its' nurburgring time...and now the launch party is over

Launch Party Is Over for Nissan GT-R - Wheels Blog - NYTimes.com

= $18K new tranny out of pocket

= pissed off owners that just paid way over list and now get to keep on paying just for driving it the way a true supercar should be capable of being driven or else drive it like a Maxima to keep from breaking it.

Porsche questions GT-R Ring claim | carsguide.com.au

do not launch your gtr or take the vdc off - NAGTROC - The Nissan GT-R Owners Club

Yeah I've been reading snippets of dissent in the big car magazines since the thing came out, they simply haven't been able to reproduce the initial claims.

this has been beat to death so many times on other forums.

Key points:

Nissan never promoted, nor put in the manual launch control. It clearly states that the warranty is void if the car is driven with the traction/stability control off.

Nissan provided proof that the car they used to get that ring time did have the same tires you can get through the dealer. The driver did hundreds of laps before the time was recorded, so he knew the car, and every turn he came across. Nissan even offered to give porsche driving lessons in their statement.

Just because you have a GTR doesnt mean youll be doing 7.38 laps around that track. Put the average joe shmoe in the zr1, and hed probably pull close to a 8 minute lap. Driving takes skill and practice. You have to know how far you can push the car in certain turns, and what the car can and cant do.

As far as the tranny issue. Its no different than a someone with a manual tranny dumping the clutch at every stoplight. The clutch will eventually go out, and wont be replaced under warranty. And im pretty sure in my cars manual it says nothing about launching my car. So why would i expect the company to replace it?

the true test will be when the V-spec comes out.

The prototype is already doing 7:25s

That will be the true comparison to the ZR1 and ACR viper

I agree with you on almost every point, NCZ13; the one I don't agree on is that Nissan didn't promote launch control. They did. There are a number of interviews where Nissan reps mention it as a feature of the car. One that springs to mind is when Jay Leno reviewed it. An engineer from Nissan talks with him specifically about LC. The 0-60 times published by Nissan were all achieved with LC.

I am not sure how this will go down, but if I had to guess I will say Nissan will cover '09 trannies under warranty, and when they do they'll make sure the owner is aware that further use of LC will then void the warranty. Of course from here on out no more LC.

interesting. I guess because I never saw it promoted in media is that i assumed it wasnt talked about period.

And actually for the 2010 models, LC is removed from the car. Making the 09 GTRs the only nissan GTRs ever with a LC feature

turn off VDC, put all the settings in R. Apply right foot to brake, push the gas down, and the throttle will hold at i think like 4500. Take foot off the brake, and the car launches.

What's funny is the BMW SMG LC, European spec cars launched by slipping the clutch slowly then WOT, wheras US spec SMG car's spun the tires to lay patches... (not talking about the new M3, with M drivelogic)

To me the most important flop on the GTR is the absolutely terrible build quality. I have detailed two of these, both had 'impressions' on the C panels like the protective film was pressed onto wet paint.

Both had miscolored gas caps

One had severe water etching...

But here is the main thing... .How can a 480 hp, 3800lb run 11s? It cannot. Magazines can even replicate the original acceleration runs. The cars were obvious ringers (I think Motor Trend dynoed the original cars at 470 hp to the wheels where production models are about 410hp)...

wow, build quality is poor?

I hope the GTR is just not a "fad" like the Acura NSX was. I loved the looks on that car.

Hm, I wouldn't consider the NSX a fad. People still buy and love those today. They're freakishly reliable and still sell for a decent amount. The GT-R, if I had to guess, will be selling for 40% of it's value in two years and will likely be riddled with issues. But that's just my guess.

gtpaul - what I find really interesting is that Nissan kept taking shots at Porsche, but Porsche is the one with a launch control system that works. :D

The build quality on the GT-R is actually quite good. Any car sitting at the Jacksonville port for extended period of time as the GT-R's where when first released, will get water etching. The fit and finish of my GT-R is comparable to my 996 turbo. Have you seen what Aston Martin's look like when they are delivered? Overspray and orange peel straight from the factory!

As for the GT-R running 11s? check the web or youtube. There are a lot of production GT-Rs running in the 11's without launch control with proof of time slips.

So, Just How Slow is a Nissan GT-R Without Launch Control Engaged? | Car News Blog at Motor Trend

Motortrend got 12.2 for the 1/4 w/o launch control, and Im sure they werent trying.

Again though, the GT-R wasnt made to be a quarter mile car, but a true world class track car that can be driven daily. It puts up all around impressive numbers.

It is Motor trends car of the year, Automobile Magazine Automobile of the year, EVO Mag's car of the year. All GT-R's are ringers I guess!!!:cooleek:

Build quality and reliability are two different things. I hope the cars are reliable, but initial evidence suggests otherwise. No one will know for a few years though.

Have you had any maintenance on yours yet, rcalcaide?

The two I have worked on had impressions on the C-pillars from the shipping film application. GMBlack's had this as well. 3 out of 6 that I know about.

I did a black GTR for one of the owners of NAGTROC and a)he was great guy b)his car was awesome c)it was screwed up.

I'd still take one, I love them... BUT the build quality is far less IME then that of a Corvette, and we already know (despited AMAZING performance) that Corvette's are ridiculed for their quality.

For anyone who doubts the performance of this car look at this forum on nagtroc

NAGTROC - The Nissan GT-R Owners Club -> Drag Strip

plenty of members who are running mid 11s bone stock w/ no launch control.

a mild tune, free flowing exhaust, and some race gas, the car does high 10s.

its absolutely brilliant piece of technology, and puts any purpose built drag race car (the kind of cars you see on the show Pinks) to shame. Full interior, runs 11s/high 10s, goes around corners, AND you can drive it to home/work/school etc.

all for under 100k (not taking into account dealership premiums)

supercar killer? I think so.

why would a purpose built drag car

need a full interior or be a corner carver?

so a $80,000 car

puts a $10,000 drag car to shame?...wow thanks for the news flash

Put a 150 shot on a bone stock C5 Z-06 and go real low 10's. There's also a couple guys with bolt-on (no internal components - N/A) going low 11's. An all wheel drive 450+ TT car that goes 11's does'nt impress me all that much. Neither does all the horrendous paint quality issues I've seen posted here either.
