They are tracking this thread, so let them know the truth.



A PC is for a beginner and a rotary is safer for someone with more experience.



Sean is the man when it comes to using a rotary, I would take his word over anyone.



You M5 guys have got some real nice cars, we over here at autopia don't want to see you mess up the finish on your cars.
 
I hate when people spread misinformation. Even with a rotary, you aren't doing a swirl removal, glaze and wax along with washing in 1.5 hours. Besides, I am sure we all noticed his car is the one in the shade.



This is especially scary...

I wonder if this guy detailed his car himself or is claiming the work of an actual detailer?

I would love to see his upcoming rotary video. 15 seconds on a 6" spot...and no damage to the paint? :think:

I hope those M5 owners don't get caught up with his verbal diarrhea and ruin their paint. If they want to learn, they should reference a knowledge site or seek out a local pro for advice...always take things that are a little too good to be true with a grain of salt.

I am super glad I came to a website geared toward paint care and not a site geared toward BMW's in general. I've got my Honda sites for Honda related info, but when it comes to my car's paint, which ever car it may be, this is the site I use.



Sure you can hit the paint every time with a rotary, but you will wear through the paint much sooner. I didn't learn that from a Honda site either! The problem is that these guys see nice results from one guy and all of a sudden he's a guru. They need to browse this or any other good site geared toward paint maintenance and read from guys that do this for a living. I do think he did a good job, but how long until he goes through the clear on that car. I'd hate to buy an M5 and use this advice only to find out in 2-3 years my clear was shot. And why in the world you wouldn't use soap blows me away. If crappy MF towels will scratch paint, why wouldn't dust scratch paint when washing without soap?



In the guy's favor he appears to have done a good job making it shine, but it's just a matter of time before that paint is shot. In all honesty I wanna see the video and see how much pressure he puts on the pad. It would be interesting to see that pad come up with paint on it.



I'll admit my knowledge is limited but I've learned enough from THIS SITE to know better!
 
Can someone please sign up and correct this guy, people are going to do some serious damage if someone doesn’t step in. I’d do it myself, but I’m still a newb..
 
Someone posted this thread on another forum I frequent today. I was just shocked reading it; that guy is so far off base it's really disturbing. Not only that, but it isn't like those pictures show something we haven't all seen a thousand times here. People will realize he's wrong when they start using his ideas.



I see their reading this thread over there. To the members on that forum; I am not going to pontificate, I will only say that Autopia is arguably the #1 site on the internet for detailing information and having read through the entire thread on your site I am literally mouth agape at some of the "tips" you're being given. I'd highly suggest spending some time on Autopia before trying any of the processes listed in that thread.

Lord almighty. I've got two rotaries and one PC, if I put either of the rotaries on the paint for 20 seconds in one spot with any pad and any polish on a speed higher than 1200 rpm I will burn the paint, period. No pressure, finishing pad, finishing polish. Nevermind using a rubbing compound on a cutting pad...
 
Heh, 3M products always look good in the shade. I've found that some people just don't "see" buffer trails or holograms, sounds like guy doesn't.



P.S. Does anyone else think his advice about how a rotary is a "man's buffer" sounds like one of the Miller Lite "Man Laws"?

OK, so I read the whole thread now, wow, I hope these guys don't go out and get a rotary and ruin their paint.



If the guy reads this thread. Here is how you should make your video tonight:



Leave buffer at your 1400 RPM's(that's what you said, right?)



Start with your foam pad, buff in same area for 20 seconds



put polisher down, go to sleep



tomorrow morning go out and focus the flare of the sun on the spot where you buffed



head to body shop for a repaint.









For other members who are reading this (M5 forum), do not try this unless you want swirl marks and holograms galore on your paint. The foam *can* burn paint and actually BUFF HOTTER than wool pads. Any direct drive machine can paint, period. Take a little while to browse these forums, rotaries are best left in the hands of professionals. Trust me, his car in full sun (not shaded pics) = teh swirlage.

Using a rotary take experience. Compounding is also a tough skill to master.



There is nothing wrong with starting out with the PC. I would have induced WAY fewer holograms on my personal car had I not started off with the Dewalt.



Hopefully this guy hasn't inspired a bunch of the M5 guys to go out and compound their cars with a rotary.



I like his gym comment too, he must work out a lot to be able to detail that fast.

Whats with his comments about "GUYS...EVERY body shop uses it..and 3M makes the paint!'/



I work for 3M, and we don't "make the paint". We make body shop supplies, and in fact we make everything BUT the paint.



The guy takes a good picture, but as far as advice he is waaaayyyy to general and is trying to apply a generic solution to all paints. (not to mention some plain old incorrect answers.)





This comment was funny too...



even the 3M guys said this is good stuff.....but 3M will have a new product out that is the best he has seen.....so..we wait to believe.....just to let you guys know...I BUY EVERYTHING and try it......So, if I say it's what you need,,then I have already blown money trying things that are not as good...



... of course the 3M guy will say its the best, what did you expect him to say? "our stuff sucks, go buy Meguires?" :D







Gee with all the good advice he's passing out why am I reading over here at Autopia? :D

...pro detailers all over the country will suddenly have a rush of black BMWs with paint problems. $$
