There are alot of pluses and minuses about fixed or mobile detailing. One thing for sure, if you have a building (eg) overhead, employees, rent, utilities, you had better be doing some cars. If you are mobile, you need to be able to do it all on the spot. Check out

Professional Carwashing & Detailing Magazine, they also have a site on line. There are

articles that discuss and deal with mobile and fixed Detailing Businesses. I'm a Mobile Operater,I can offer my experinces in the business. pm Me! I'll tell you mo!:hifive:

No offense, but you should be answering these questions. Some questions you should ask yourself are; How successful is your fixed shop? Do you have the capital/labor for a mobile operation? Do your customers have a need for mobile service?

I agree.

Its only a good idea if you think your area will support it. If the area has not need for it, then it obviously wont be successful.

Maybe ask some of your daily customers what they think about such a thing. Would they be willing to give you business?

I always thought the guys that had shops started out mobile and explanded and grew into a fixed location.......

How often do guys start up with a shop first....?

Just curious.....

my shop is doing good. I am not trying to serve to my customers, i would try to get new and used car dealers. also i thnk my shop is doing good i have four fulltime guys and one parttime guy and i only been open 8 mounths

Have you talked to the dealerships? Where are they getting their work done now? I wouldn't build the ARK if it isn't going to rain! Make sure you have a market for your mobile unit. You can test this with your current customers, or get a contract going with a dealership. Make sure you price it out right- if you price your services equal to the shop, why will customers go to the shop? Maybe the mobile unit should be a niche---scratch repair, interior specialist, etc.? Make it something a bit different than the shop that compliments the shop. This is known as the long tail--offer as much as you can between the shop and mobile unit.

In my opinion a shop is much better for the bigger 2+ hour details where as the 15 minute wash its not worth the customer driving to the shop. It starts making it hard to park all these cars that come and go every 15-30 minutes. So you will be limited by shop space and parking.

However if you do the 15-30 minutes washes at the customers house then it free's up the shop space to be do bigger details. So you'd then free up space inside the shop and outside the shop by avoiding the 15-30 minute washes. With the extra space you could then possibly start a retail shop at the front.
