Minor scratches

I take care of my car, but this past month on a warm day my wife decided to go thru a car wash (the one that has these nylon brushes that spin while you stay stationary)...and these brushes were apparently not totally free of ice.

I washed the car by hand later on that month and noticed the scratches on both doors, so I proceded to use numerous types of polishes, one being Maguires scratch remover..(nada), use a paste wax and after Turtle wax Colortime and this has covered most but not all.....I have a buffer and thought that with it I could make these go away but no....

This is the picture of my car....any suggestions...

Hard to judge by that picture, do you have something close up.

If you take your finger nail and go up and down along the scratch does it get caught in the scratch at any point?

Do you know how to use a rotary? if so you might want to try some compound with the rotary at speed 2 to see what happens.

Start with less aggressive and then move to more aggressive.

That's were I'm lost...I see topics on using abrassives on clear coat, but which type would be recommended??...I used the rotary type buffer with a terry cloth bonnett and after a "furry" type, not sure the actual term for it...sorry, and I know these scratches are just on the clear coat because they aren't that deep to put my nail in them....almost like if someone would have leaned on a dirty car with their clothing.... thanks for the response tho..

I like to use 3m Perfect it III rubbing compound. This should take out the scratches using the rotary.

When you say a rotary type buffer, do you mean a PC?

You suggest 3M Rubbing compund#3....now what are the chances using the tool below ( sorry not sure what a PC is ) I will go thru the clear coat and reach the actual color of the paint...That is my worst fear...

Some people like those machines *IMO* i hate them, i feel that the bonnets collect dirt and hold it in. That is not a rotary or a PC (porter cable Dual action polisher) it is just a buffer. You would probably have to really work hard to remove scratches with that machine.

thanks for the input...now another one for you...where do I buy a portable cable dual action polisher, because IMO sometimes spending money on tools that you will need to make your job easier is not a waste but an investment....

I appreciate all your help on the subject.

I had a few of those polishers for years and wondered why I couldn't really improve my swirls and scratches. When I got my PC 7424 it was like night and day. Now I collect polishes like "medicines" to see which combos ( also the correct pads) work best on the blemishes I'm working on.

Thanks guys for all the information, I have found a place that sells the PC 7424 at a great price and now I'll have to wait for good weather again since we are getting snow this week.

Someone from another Forum suggested Maguire's NXT, any of you guys have used it or recommended it??.....

Thanks again!!

So HEK, what ended up being the best combination on your car? Did you do the work by hand or did you get a PC? JC

I have had to deal with Mr.Winter so I have yet to tackle the job..I promise to do a before and after shots once the weather breaks.

On order NXT and a PC-Kit...my car is covered with mud and dirt which is OK with me...I will wait for warm weather and not take another chance with a car wash...
