Microfiber Towels

Placed my order today for all my detailing supplies and completely forgot about the MF towls.

I was at both Costco and Walmart today and was interested in knowing if anyone has used either of these. If so, what did you think of them?

Also, it is best to machine wash them and then let them hang dry?

I have used the costco towels, and for someone at my skill level (just starting out) they work really well. I am just careful not to rub the sewn edge against the paint, but I don't know if it would have an effect.

I humble myself to others on this forum though, since I'm really just getting going with the obession that is detailing :) Wait until I tell my wife I have another hobby!

Call and add some good MF's to your order!
There is a big difference in MF towels and the ones at Wal*Mart didn't impress me a great deal. They may be fine, but once you have some quality MF's you will see the difference. The large blue MF at Wal*Mart seems to be the best of what they have and I do use some of them for S&W. Our Wal*Mart has MF towels priced at 97 cents for a 2 pack, about $4 for another 2 pack and I think it is 8 for less than $5. They might be fine, but like I said, they didn't look that great. Some are smaller than the more or less standard 16" x 16" size.
I have never seen the ones at Costco or Sam's Club. (I have a real problem paying someone so I can spend my money at their store)
Considering that for a hobby detailer, $30 worth of MF's will probably last several years, IMO good MF's aren't that much more expensive.

I machine wash and machine dry mine after every use. You may have some static electricity build up right after you remove them from the dryer, but it dissipates pretty quickly.

I used the cheapest at walmart 2 for under a buck and while they work ok, didn't like them enough to stock up. The ones at sams club blue 18 for under $10 16x16 I think are great. I'll be buying 10 packs in next week or two. I'm sure there are better MF's out there but the sams ones fit me perfect. Also the large 40" x 20" (around) MF at walmart I love for drying cars. I think they are $6 or $7 a piece. I bought one and used it for a few days and like it enough that I went to walmart at 1 in the morning to buy a few more so I could have enough to do what was scheduled the next day :)

My experience is with the Walmart ones, and they aren't great but they are OK. I've used them for general clean up and to remove polishes when I was out of clean good ones.

I also keep 3 of them in the car. One in the glove compartment to wipe the dash (great at picking up dust) and a couple under the seat along with some QD to remove bird bombs and insect guts.

They don't really see much paint these days because I have better more plush ones for those jobs.

Walmart MFs have their purpose, but for wax and polish removal you'll have more success with others.

smoothasglass: contact AutoGeek & add MF's to your order. IMHO, Wal-Mart MF's are OK for door jambs, wheels, and glass but I'm very lukewarm about using them on paint.

I bought some mint green MF's from www.winnerscircle.com for about $2/ea and they were surprizingly nice ... not real plush but they've handled many washings very well.

Also take a look at Poorboy's blue Super Thick & Mega Plush, excellent towels for $5/ea

I wash hot with standard liquid laundry soap (no powder, no fabric softener) and add a few ounces of vinegar, rinse 2x - 3x times, and hang to dry.

The problem is my order has already been shipped. After looking at the Walmart ones, I agree with you that they are kind of on the borderline, but the ones I saw at Costco seem more in line with what I would expect.

If you have a PepBoys or Autozone (or any automotive store) nearby, look for some of the new Meguiar's Supreme Shine MF towels. They are very good towels for an OTC towel and are very reasonably priced.
