MF towels...need help before ordering

Tex Star Detail

Formerly TexasTB
OK........
I need a WHOLE bunch of MF towels
What do you suggest for....
1. Window cleaning/door jambs/ general interior wipe downs.
(will the costco/SAMS be good for these areas? If so, what are the same outside of the stores...since I do not have memberships?)

2. Paint...waxes, sealant, glazes......removal

TIA
Chris

I don't use mf, i'm old school so i stick with some good terry cotton towels. but...

I would get some cheaper ones from sams, or costco for your windows jambs, wheels and odd jobs. Some think they gotta have the best towels for those areas but IMO there is absolutely no reason to spend a few dollars per towel for the dirty work.

For your paint, i would go with some high qaulity ones. And even still i wouldn't go with the best or the highest price. I'd look into some package deals. pack of 6 or 12, something not to pricey but decent quality.

How many are you getting? For each detail you'll need:
2 for windows
2-3 for dash & plastic & vinyl; 1 extra for leather
I use rags for door jambs then use 1 mf for a final wipe
1 mf for drying alum wheels
ww for drying--I use 2-3 big ones and trade off, using them for 2-4 cars.
1 mf/pass buffing, 2 for clay, depending how you apply clay.
1 mf for waxing.
I use rags for really dirty jobs and chrome polish application; 1 mf for chrome/KAIO wipe off.

So I use:
rags for dirty jobs
cheap mf for int, jambs, chrome buffing, wheel drying
expensive mf for paint work
ww for drying

OK...so It looks like I'll be getting about 100 cheapies for all around cleaning for wheels, jambs, windows, etc.....

What brands do you recommend for paint work...????

Ok the Sam's Club or Costco ones are fine for door jambs and various other stuff. I purchased some Costco ones a few years ago and they were very nice and i had been using them for the last few years even on the paint with no issues. I sent my wife to get me some a couple months back and it seems they changed brands and although they feel soft they just struck me as not paint safe so i will no relegate those to dirty jobs. For the paint however i suggest one of two things. One is contact the fine folks at pakshak.com and ask if the can give you a deal on a bulk purchase. By bulk purchase i mean at least 24 or more. This is a good towel for exterior and from what i understand they will no longer be carrying these due to the new MF they have gotten in so once these are sold out that is it. Let them know you are a member here. Ranney is a great guy and will take care of you rest assured.

The other option is of course to contact one of our sponsors and ask them to give you a deal as well. They have various MF as well. I also happen to have some Terry Towels that i got at Costco and they are some of the plushiest towels i have and I would not hesitate one second to use them on my paint. Very high quality.

If you feel you have to have a MF for everything, go to Wal*Mart and get the 2 pack of 14" x 14" MF's for less than a dollar.
I didn't, since I prefer to use my old terry towels for the grunge work.
Pretty hard to beat the price and many people seem to feel they would rather use a low quality MF before they would use a good quality cotton terry towel.

Good MF's are available from lots of places, but good quality MF's aren't usually a cheap item. The recent posts about the "bargain" Mf's from a supplier, (maybe CG which I think is Chemical Guys?), that were of such low quality that they were returned immediately, kind of point that out.

A recent thread discussing MF towels is here.
Maybe it will be of some help.

Joe:
You describe them as decent. From the info on e-bay, the seller seems to think they are much better than that.
Count: 180,000 Plus Fibers Per Square Inch
The softest, thickest and heaviest you will find on eBay.
Any chance they exaggerated a little? :)
The ad copy would lead me to expect a pretty high quality towel, but that doesn't seem to have been the case.

Thanks for the offer, but I have all of the MF's I need at this time. :) Where were you when I was buying all of them?:stick
FWIW, they are all such that I feel comfortable using them on any part of the vehicles. I don't think having to keep track of good or grunge MF's is something I would want to do. I just grab whatever one is on top and it's fine for any project I am considering.

W/DetailCity discount and free shipping I got my pack of 6 @ $4.04 each. Deeper discounts, I bet, if TexasTB's 'bunch' is more than this.

Personally I don't think this is very expensive for these 16"x24" MF. Very nice MF.

Compared to the ~$0.50 a piece I paid for 25 MFs at BJ's Wholesale Club that's pretty expensive. However, you get what you pay for. The one's you can find at Costco, Sams, BJs, and other warehouse clubs are not the best IMO for long term paint care. You can tell immediately there's a major difference in quality. I only use them for jambs and other dirty jobs.

Always recommend that you try a few mf towels from several sources. And go with what works for you.

You can't have enough mf towels. :)

With Aloha,
Ranney :)

Yes, I recommend trying different towels from different sources and go with your fav.

For those with access to Costco, I have purchased (decent) plush type MF towels there in the past. Somewhere around 10 for $12. (yellow)
Recently I picked up a quality pack of 10 waffle weaves (contains various colors) for about $10 too.
Both of these type of towels, when folded twice, are just a bit larger than my hand, my prefered size.

WalMart has a nice cheap pack of plush that I'll use even on door jams or wheels. Just rinse and toss them in the wash and not care that they come out as clean.
Remember, not to use bleach or fabric softeners as they ruin the towels advantages.

I used to use the Terry towels also.. now i'm a total MF man..
that said I really never bought a lot fo towels I found kits and got deals that way.
Now i'm a firm beliver that poorboys has some of the best towels out there...

I noticed that the tags on the WW MF's I got from Costco have a web address on them. http://www.euroworeilly.com/

They have great prices;

12 Pack 16 x 16 Microfiber Terry Weave Towel $13.44

Microfiber Waffle Weave Towel 17 x 24 $3.39

3 Pack 16 x 28 Microfiber Waffle Weave Towel $7.47

12 Pack 16 x 16 Microfiber Satin Weave Towel $19.32

BUT their shipping charges bring the price up unless you order $100 in which case shipping is free. So if you have a Costco nearby and/or want only a small quantity, this site may not be as cost efficient.

These are the shipping rates that posted after I added a 12 pack of Satin Weaves for $19.32 to the cart;

United Parcel Service (1 x 1.25lbs) United Parcel Service
Next Day Air $34.11
2nd Day Air $15.10
3 Day Select $11.95
Ground $8.92

[Note] Now, after typing all that I noticed the site doesn't say where they are located and their toll free number is missing a digit. Though they have a page that allows you to send them an e-mail, maybe this wouldn't be a good place to order from until they are easier to contact.

They look interesting especially with the 80/20 blend. i only found one other EBayer with 80/20 blend that claims their towels weigh 2 - 2.2 ounces each.

I'll be curious to know how your new towels hold up and handle multiple washings. If they are better than the AG ones you mentioned and hold up, then it's a great deal.

Keep us posted.

This is the the bag of MF that my wife grabbed for me last time at Costco. They also sell these on that site. They are softer than the first batch but something feels odd about them to me. And here is a picture of the first batch i got from Costco a few years ago and these that the Euro place sells.
