Metabo Rotary Gone Bad!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well after much reading and reviews I bought my first rotary ( Metabo ). When I first used the machine it seemed like a solid unit. I used it for a few hours without any problems with a 6 inch edge durofoam pads. When I changed to a bigger edge 8 inch pad the unit started to get hot and started to make cluncking noises :nervous: ... as some time passed the unit started to glitch and it seemed to get stuck even thou the motor winding was still turning inside of the machine. I let the machine cool down and with my detail left incomplete I proceeded to try again. The machined started to miss more and more untill it would not rotate any more with any kind of load on the machine. Called toolfetch.com and have still not recieved a call back... anybody else have the same experience as me??? I'll keep you posted as to what went wrong and until then I've ordered a makita polisher :nervous2:

I've read only good stuff about the Metabo, but I myself got a Makita 9227 and havn't had ANY issues at all with it. GL with your situation.

What model did you buy? I have the PE12-175 model, and the instruction booklet states that the maximum backing plate diameter is 7inches. I dont think it matters though what size pads you use. I use pads that are 8.5 inches in diameter. Sounds like it might be an internal defect. Metabo has a pretty strong warranty, so it will be replaced. Try calling Metabo directly.

Yes I was using the Metabo PE12-175 and I was using a 6 inch backing plate which was sold to me by toolfetch.com... Andrew at toolfetch was very nice and said he will call me back with a RMA number so I can send the unit back and get a full refund... I don't know if I will ever use Metabo again but I will use toolfetch due to their professional attitude towards their customers.

Sounds like you got a lemon , at least they stand behind it and are making it right . :buffing:

yeah... what he said.. I wouldn't be too quick to discount Metabo. I'm willing to bet that it was and internal screw which wasn't tightened to spec and somehow managed to get through QA.

Happens to the best of them... and I'm sure we'll all see more and more of this sort of thing as production moves to china for fast cheap labour

I'm thinking of keeping it and giving it another try... They said they would have no problem exchanging the unit for a new one... we'll see what happens thanks for all the input

Just got my Makita 9227C WOW!!!! what a differnce... the feel and sound of the Makita is so much better. It seems to have a lower sound level and less vibration... I think I found a winner. Another thing that got on my nerves about the Metabo was that the speed control was very loose and it had a tendency of speeding up on its own. And due to its position I would constantly hit the speed control on accident but thats my position and the way I hold the machine. Another thing that I like with the Makita is the trigger which the Metabo did'nt have. I'm going to need a very little unit to do vertical panels so I'm looking for a top of the line, light and sturdy unit... Anyone with any suggestions... FEIN... PLEASE ADVISE!!!!!!
