Metabo PE 12-175 Thermal Shutdown

I don't think it is bad run. IMHO it is because Metabos are smaller (so they can be lighter) so it is harder for them to dissipate that heat. Lightness comes at price.

I just can't think that the machine would be compromised at that price point. It should be able to cool itself enough that it's not shutting down.

For the record, both the local authorized tech that looked at my Metabo (he said it looked brand-new inside) and I spoke to techs at Metabo and we were both told this was normal behavior for the machine. and that I should only run it over 3 except for very light, short-time polishing on delicate areas. The tech I spoke to even spoke to a product manager and verified this. Given that my back isn't the best so I appreciate the light weight and that I have learned to polish with my Metabo as it is, I'm not sorry I bought the machine.

I know, that is a different discussion. My comment was on whether it is a "bad batch" or consenquence of design. Obviously it seems to me consenquence of design. Otherwise they wouldn't have felt thermal shutdown implementation is needed.

Ok Bret and I both used our metabo's yesterday to detail a vette. He was having issues with his in the past getting hot. When he used it yesterday it seemed fine. For the first time mine was starting to give me some issues. It would loose power and shut off for a second. Well I was using an old 50' extension cord that has been twisted like a pretzel. I switched cords and it worked 100% fine.

I was having a problem a few years back with the PC and rotary getting hot..both the machines and the plug...I talked to the electrician in work....he said it was my cords...I was using to small of a gauge....so I went out and bought 2 contractor grade cords...I think they are 12 gauge ...problem solved...both machine ran cool and seemed like the PC did not bog as bad either....

Now...I was at wal mart and they were blowing a lot of stuff out as they redesigning the store..I went to the clearance area and they had RV power cords..they were 10 gauge..thick as hot dogs...lol....normally they were 79.99 they were blowing them out at 7.99..I grabbed 2...I use them for the generator...nice cords....heavy though....

but a right cord solves a lot of over heating..I found out...

Just an FYI. I took mine to the Repair Center yesterday and the guy said that since it looked brand new that Metabo would probably replace it for free. I'll be hearing from him on Monday.

He thinks something came lose on the head so it lost torque permanently and not just as part of the thermal shutdown.

This is 'good to know' information. That's for all the input and experiences guys! Sorry it had to happen, but it helps the people going forward. I'm (hopefully) getting mine next week, but have been using one over the last couple months. I've also noticed heating issues and resolved them with switching out extension cords.

Maybe the mods can make this 'sticky' in case it happens to others.
