Wife left AZ a week ago with the kids for a road trip thru AZ, UT, ID, MT and we met up last night when I flew into Boise....Happy to hee her and especially happy to see my little girl but her Jeep...OMG!!! Gree/yellow dead bugs, dust, mud, road grime and a starnge and unusual odor inside the car....Needless to say, after a trip to Target and then tracking down the closest coin op all is right in my world again....still not perfect but better.

Today we are driving north to where my brother in law lives and he owns a small dealership with a full detail dept and has already told me I can have at it.....anyone esle spend their vacation this way?

Yeah, relax, man. If anything, take care of the front end with the bugs and such so they don't kill your paint. The only curves you should be carressing are... you know which...

You think thats bad.

Have you ever detailed your rental car?

I always bring some QD, MF towels, and #9 when I go on the road!

And yes, sometimes the people that I travel with call me INSANE!

You're talking about fenders and quarter panels, right? :)

What is even funnier is that today we went to her families big reunion out here...all very nice, cool people, but, also mostly hard working cowboy and farmer types that have vehicles for work and more work and my wife starts telling this story and they asked me how I "wash" the car and what more i need to do so without giving it a thought I go on about clay and Klasse and all the things that are normal vocabulary for anyone on here and by the time I fished you could have heard a pin drop...they thought I was insane and the concept of clay was way beyond comprehension...from now on I will keep my detailing confessions on here

kevmo,

That's hysterical! I'm picturing this big group of people, with the mouths wide open, just staring at you like you really have lost your mind.

Tell the wife that you're completely normal. Here's a brief story of my vacations. My wife and I both have family in FL, so we make 3-4 driving trips a year from NC to FL. Of course, the Suburban gets dirty on the way down, so as soon as we hit town, I'm plotting and planning on just when I'm going to detail. However, the water is so hard down in that part of FL that I had to convince my in-laws and parents to install water softeners FOR THEIR OUTSIDE FAUCETS so I could wash the Suburban and not stress over the inevitable hard water spots.

Even better, since I grew up in FL, I've kept several detailing clients down there. So, any time I'm in town, they have me stop by. It pays for the whole trip, so my wife doesn't have much room to argue!

Boy you got that right! The water doesn't taste bad but leave some in a glass and it dries to a crust! :shocked Supposed to be real good for horses - lots of minerals! And horses don't get water spots.

I just spent a week at a desert resort on a lake and I had my little "Emergency kit " in the trunk. Conversation got on to "What do you do for a hobby etc " And the detailing questions started .. one of the guys had a new Honda bike which he had dumped softly in the sand and scratched the front fender. It was like a pearl blue/purple and he had tried to "Cut Polish" them out with no luck. I took a look and bet him $20 I could do it in +/- 10 Min. None of the scratches and "Polish" induced swirls / haze could be felt with my finger nail . I used a WalMart MF and DACP followed by #82 then ColorX.. not a problem ..

Next thing you know its like an epidemic. I was holding 7 AM *How to remove scratches * classes .. It had to be 7 AM cuz at noon it was 130 in the sun.

The resort I was at has a lot of MB/BMW/Jags in he lot and a bunch of good people that just don't know how to take care of them. One morning they even set up a canopy and got a sheepskin mitt and car wash soap ( I had my MF drying towels ) and I washed/dried and dressed a beautiful black 7 series BMW

just to show then at least a more close to proper way to wash / dry a car. And also to show it doesn't take all day .. but more like an hour.

Every one of the cars was swirled badly from improper washing and they were just amazed how much more brilliant mine looked beside the black 7 series. I had a hard time explaining it wasn't totally the wax/sealant doing it .. a lot was the prep and the polishing.

these stories are to funny, i'm flying out to Northern VA soon to spend time w/ the girlfriends parents and i'm taking my arsenol to help pass the time and am gonna detail some of their cars :D

Well...wife and I are both back home and the results are:

Boise = I quick wash and minor detail

McCall (after a trip to Stanley and 75 mile sof dirt road) = thorough detaila and pressure wash of under carriage.

McCall (after trip to hopt springs and ski area) repeat step 2

Return to AZ = Weekend
