Anyone have any good links if you have recently or are familar with setting up a merchant / credit card accepting acccont ?

I just got a call from my local bank rep and I'm awaiting their figures, but it seemed awfully high.....

I use Authorize.net and Retriever. A local payment processing company set me up. A lot is going to depend on any machineryyou need such as swipe machines.

I get asked so seldom about taking credit cards, it isn't even worth setting an account up, especially if I get charged even if I don't have any transactions.

Agreed, and once you establish a good customer base, they will remember, cash or check only....

In addition, when the recommend you to their friends, they pass along the payment options.

If you're grossing more than $100,000, then you probably ned to accept CC.

Less than that, you can't afford all the 'extra' charges. Hell, I'd have to get a phone line... that's $45/month alone!

In my former, nightclub life, I have mucho experiece with CC.

My clients under stand "cash or check only." I've not had a 'bad check' problem, ever.

Cash is good.

Credit Card is bad.

.....and its rediculous the amounts these credit card companies charge for your client charge.......+ a monthly maint. fee ?

The fees is one reason I went with Charge America - I paid a $99 set up fee. With Charge America I pay no monthly fees, no equipment charges, no monthly minimum, no batching required, and best of all funds are transferred to my account within 48-72 hours. I have no problem with the 3.95% on each transaction. My average full detail is $135.00 (small cars & pickups) - even at that rate they charge me $5.33, leaving me with $129.67. To me personally, it's worth my being able to give my customers an alternative or choice of payment.

I am set up with a company called merchant services, and in my opinion they are the worst bunch of freakin @$$holes I have ever done business with.

I have a contract for no min charge per month, but they were taking $10 a month from me. I needed to fight them for months, faxing & faxing them the contract. Finally I got someone who said they blew up the contract at staples and it showed I was correct. They finally credited my account after 6 months.

Then i went a period without a charge for 3 months and they withdrew 250 from my account without even telling me. They said they thought i wanted to cancel. I asked them if anyone called in, and was told they took the early termination fee since i had no charges for 3 months. Boy did i let them have it.

IMO credit machines are not worth it, most of my customers pay cash and don't want to charge. so I can't wait for my contract to be up because the machine is going in the garbage.

Wow NY detailer, you really had a bad experience with Merchant Services. If those things had happened to me I don't think I would have been as calm as you seemed to have been. That's another reason I went with Charge America because I have no contract and no cancellation fee. On my own I did purchase a portable CC machine to make imprints of the cards (cost $35.00).

Like you, the majority of my customers pay cash -- maybe 5% will use MC/Visa and that's streaching it. It just an option for my customers. I must admit, I have been getting an increase in full details instead of just a car wash when people see that I except MC/Visa.

On another note - are you getting any snow there in NY? I saw a few flurries today here in Atlanta today and the temp stayed in the upper 30's but I did manage to get in 2 details.

It is to cold to detail today, i think is around 30, some one called me to detail there car and i turned them down. Told them i am closed until warmer weather. They said they would wait.
