Menzerna PG not removing 2000 grit marks

I just finished wet sanding my car, and I've been using Menzerna Power Gloss Compound on a light cutting pad. I was told that PG would take out the 2000 grit marks, but it's not. I've even tried a wool pad with no luck.

The paint is nice and shiny, but its full of light sanding marks.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Shane

Are you using it with an orbital or rotary polisher? If you are using it with an orbital it may take many passes to completely remove the sanding scratches. Even with a rotary it may take several passes. Just be patient. It could also be light holograming if you are using a rotary.

Sorry- I'm using a PC7424. Would it be quicker to just obtain/use some Unigrit 3000 and then polish it out?

With the PC, my friend, you have taken on a nobel task! Option 1 is to get some Unigrit 3000 and polish it up from there. It will still take a number of passes using the PC so patience is key. Option 2 is to use a rotary to polish from where you are now. Option 3 is to take it to a pro to have it finished from where you are. If you have plenty of time and patience then go for option 1.

IMHO... if you wet sand your vehicle then it will require a high speed circular (rotary) polisher to remove the wet sand marks. The PC will require multiple passes and it still may not get all of them out. The Menzerna PowerGloss is a nice compound to work with and it really speeds up the process with a rotary. The only thing that is a disadvantage is the dust and it could stain trim.

Fortunately I'm only doing one panel at a time and its not my daily driver. I guess I'll order some Unigrit 3000 and go from there. Do any of the autoparts stores carry it? Or should I just order from Meguiars?

I ordered mine directly from Meguiars, but I'm not sure who else carries it.

With only a PC in hand, 3000 grit is your only option IMO. But it also takes a while to get anywhere with 3000, so don't be timid; you'll probably have to make double or triple the stokes with 3000 to remove whatever it was you were removing with 2000.

I assume you were able to get the surface glossy with the PC, but you could still see the rows of scatch lines (sometimes they really appear big)?

Why are you wet sanding anyways?

I'm wet sanding because its a new paint job that was never sanded/buffed. The orange peel in the clear is pretty noticeable and once you've seen a car with a leveled clear coat.....its like that first time you see a nice detail job.

How long did it take for you to get the unigrit from Meguiars?

I'm also going to pick up a rotary tonight. I've already spent 3 hours on the hood and its nowhere close to being done. I think 1500 to 2000 followed by the rotary should be good. If not then I'll order some 3000 unigrit and go from there.
