Meguiar's M205 Ultra Finishing Polish Review!

Question Tim......

I don't hear Ultrafina being mentioned as much anymore.....

Have you ever tried any comparisons of 205 vs. UF after 105 for finishing results......?

Just askin'.......;)

Hi Dave,

I really like UF. In fact I always have a couple of quarts of UF around just in case! On some paints, the M205 has not finished down as well as it does on others. In those cases, I tend to reach for UF after the M205. BUT as for going from M105 straight to UF, no I haven't. Hopefully others who have will chime in! :)

Great post and observations, Tim. Always appreciate your product reviews on various forums.

I'm beating my head against a black Harley-Davidson dresser. I looked forward to hitting the front fairing with M105 as it picks up a lot of gouges from flying gravel and serious bug splats. I worked my way up to M105 w/PFW and was amazed at the finish's gloss and clarity and minimal marring. Darn close to LSP ready. Massaged it with white LC and M205 and was extremely pleased. The fiberglass saddlebags turned out equally as well with M205 and white LC, they don't get the forward-facing abuse the front fiberglass fairing does. All the fiberglass impressed me as charactoristic of a hard clear coat.

I expected equally pleasing results on the metal tank but found nothing but frustration. M205 looked pretty good using LC white under the halogens. The Brinkmann revealed serious marring and haze though. After trying different pads and pressures I moved to M105 and LC white just to see what's what. The hazing cleared up but micromarring remained, even after moving to progressively less aggressive pads with 105. The finish on the tank impresses me as a softer clear coat, possibly one of those "sticky" finishes I've seen reported but never encountered. I ended up polishing with LC white and 106FF and then jeweling with LC gray in order to get acceptable results. "Acceptible", not nearly up to the results seen on the fiberglass surfaces.

I've got a contact at H-D looking into whether different finishes are used on the fiberglass vs metal parts. I know they put their CC on hot so it spreads over the striping without ridges. The tin and the fiberglass is painted at the same facility... I suppose it might make sense to use different products on different surfaces. I haven't encountered this on other H-D colors, just this black. It's driving me nutz! I suppose if I'd throw away the Light of Truth my sanity would return. Until I wheel it out into the sun D'OH! :scared:

I'm considering giving Ultrafina a try, a product I've never used. Only thing I've seen is quarts, any idea of anyone that sells smaller sizes?

Appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks... TL

I worked with 205 this past weekend, here is latests.

I cannot finish 205 with a rotary no matter how I try............with a DA it is very nice. However it still seems to leave behind filling properties on softer paints. I feel UF is a much better final polish because its faster, and corrects better, and because it corrects better has a lesser chance of filling.

I love 105 and PFW, the finish is so nice that UF will remove most wool marring left behind on softer paints. The old verison of 105 has more bite, and finishes down easier on a rotary, than new 105 on a DA.

I think Megs needs to rework the 205 or a rotary.

Cheers,
GREG

Alternative polishes -
3M has upgraded its Perfect-It Paint Finishing System product line to better work with the harder clear coats -
3M? Perfect-It? 3000 Extra Cut Rubbing Compound, 06060
3M? Perfect-It? 3000 Ultrafina? SE (US) 06068 / Ultrafina SE (UK) 50383

3M specifically recommends starting at 1000 rpm, working it in at 1800 rpm and finishing at 1000 RPM.

205 is not a diminishing abrasive and that may be what is giving you problems.
