I don't think it's the water. If you have any doubts, try washing your tire with straight water from your hose. It won't take the Endurance off. Not using a pressure washer, of course.
I think it's actually the abrasive action of the road grime, and also the flexing of the tire carcass which wears the stuff off. It's kind of like flexing a piece of rubber and then using a scrub brush on it, over and over.
