im looking to buy some meguairs stuff by the gallon etc

has anyone tried engine kote, S-dressing, W-dressing, quick detailer?

also what polishes do you recommend most finishes i do are very smooth, little defects etc, just love that rich deep wet look shine so nothing agressive or heavy etc

also do any of there quick detailers have carnauba i see some for 15 buks a gallon and other for 25

I've used the W-Dressing and think it is pretty good...especially given the price. Full strength for a higher gloss, mix 1 part dressing to a half part water for lower satin gloss. If you use it full strength on interior panels you really need to buff it dry so it isn't greasy. Don't bother using it on tires....it's gone after the first rain or 3 days, whichever comes first. I basically I use it on interior panels or rubber window/door seals only.

Engine Kote I have abandoned....I don't care for it. In fact, I need to get around to sending my remaining EK to Tassadar....just haven't gotten to the UPS place in a while. I have never tried the S-Dressing.

For mild polishes on well maintained finishes the following come to mind (in no specific order); Meg's Swirl Free Polish (#82), P21s GEPC, Poorboys Pro Polish or SSR1. I've been told that the Meg's Hand Polish is even better than their #7 as far as ease of use. There are lots of good ones out there and almost all will give you great results if you use them properly. THe major differences between them will be ease of use in application and removal.

QDs with carnauba I've use Poorboys QD+ or One Grand SHowoff. Have heard EF Clear Pearl is excellent.

Meguiar's "Quick Detailer"

Keep in mind that Meguiar's products often have names that confuse people. Quick Detailer is fairly aggressive cleaner/wax and is NOT a QD in the usual sense of the word.
I don't think any of Meguiar's QD's have carnauba. Final Detail has silicone, but does a good job of freshening up a vehicles appearance. Quik Detailer (no c in Quik) in the Maroon bottle is not a bad product, either. Final Inspection seems to be known to most all detailers. Lots of good QD's out there at many price levels. The Platinum UGE is very good and is compatible with UPP sealant. A little more money, but over the time a gallon lasts me, the cost is pretty minimal.
 
NattyBumppo why did you abandon engine kote im just about to order some Detailer products from Dwayne and im considering engine kote for the engine compartment and Wheel Wells.

yes i tried meguairs pure hand polish and i do like it more than #7.

i guess ill try the W- dressing can you use that on leather seats and wood panels ?

anyone try there gallon car washes, i wonder if the carnauba one for 5 extra buks is worth it
 
I tend to stay away from those carnuba wash's there commenly used at dealers for there beading action so they dont have to hand wax. There Regular Detailer Line Wash is probley pretty good, I have used the widely avalible Gold Glass Wash and its works pretty good. As for the W-Dressing you could use it on leather seat I would imageing but I would lean towards something like 303 or 1Z Tiepenflouge sorry only JGV knows how to spell that :o.

Because of it i don't use my 303 for more than 3 months! It lasted on exterior trim a couple of weeks of rain and washes

Absolutely. #7 is supposed to be totally non-abrasive whereas #9 is meant to remove light swirls.

As for Engine Kote. My experience with it was not all that good stemming mostly from inadequate sprayers I believe. If you don't have a sprayer that can deliver a super fine mist with no droplets the Engine Kote will work fine. I tried the regular Zep professional sprayers I use to no avail. I purchased a $5.00 sprayer from Lowes and still ended up with lots of blotchy spots. Now with a normal dressing the blotches wouldn't be a problem as you could just buff them in. But Engine Kote dries to a very hard shell like finish which is meant to be very durable....and IT IS! So durable in fact that once it has begun to set up you can't buff it. Oh, and DON"T get oversrpay on any painted panels like a fender. Trust me, it is a real SOB to remove.

I have heard from other's that if you buy Engine Kote then you should seriously consider purchasing the sprayer from Meguiars that is specifically meant for Engine Kote. It is even silk screened with the Engine Kote label and I guess the spray head is designed to work well with that product. One person in particular I know uses the Megs sprayer and EK and loves the combo. In fact, Meguiars makes spprayers speficially for most of of their products. Ask Dwayne is he has em or can get em. They all have Meg's receommended dilution rations silk screened into the bottles.

If you can get the EK on with a good sprayer it will be an extremely durable, matte black finish. Very nice. If you plan on buying W-Dressing you may want to to try that first. It won't last as long as EK but much easier to use and you can dilute or use full strength to satisfy your gloss preference.

thanks for you advice im gonna try the w dressing since its easier to use i like to do touch ups anyway so i dont need the super durable ek

Hi Frankie,

Unlike Natty, I actually really like Meguiar's Engine Kote. The key with using it is to use multiple thin coats with a fine mist sprayer. I would suggest that you use Meguiar's Engine Kote spray bottle with the High Volume spray head.

Either the W or the S based dressings are really good depending on their intended application. I would also recommend Meguiar's #40 Rubber & Vinyl Cleaner Conditioner. It is a product that both cleans and protects. Its sheen can be controlled by either application or wipe off method.

The "Quik Detailer" you are referring to is the QD in the Consumer Line. It is a good product but it is not body shop safe. The confusion comes from the other #66 "Quick Detailer" from the Professional Series (notice the different spellings of Quik vs Quick. It took me a while to figure that one out!) The #66 is a one step cleaner/wax.

In terms of polishes, glazes or wax. I would suggest for cars that are in pristine shape to use: Moderate swirls: #83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish (DACP); Light swirls or new uncured paint: #80 Speed Glaze; or generally cleaning/very light swirls: #9 Swirl Remover (or #82 Swirl Free Polish) followed by #7 Show Car Glaze (or #81 Hand Polish), sealed with #20 Polymer Sealant and topped with #26 Hi-Tech Yellow Wax or Medallion Premium Paint Protection. The products in the brackets are from the Body Shop Series: excellent products and larger bottle sizes.

Finally, none of the QD's have carnauba in them as a QD is doing a different job. If you want carnauba protection in a quick spray type product (following a wipe down with a QD), I would use Meguiar's Quik Wax which is a carnuaba based product that produces an incredible depth and gloss on the paint.

wow thanks tim you sure know your stuff

as far as the tire dressing which gives the highest possible shine? i like buying by the gallon and up so ill pick up the ones you suggested, you got it down to a science!
 
I don't like the w-dressing. It is a dollar cheaper then #40 so I will stick to #40. The s-dressing is their shiniest if sprayed on . It can be sprayed on wet tires and still dry shiney. You will have the typical problems withtheir s-dressing (solvent) like you do with everybody elses.

I use #66 for my regular monthly clients. I love that stuff. I am now trying out their degreassers and GP cleaners and will report back my results.
