Megs PC pads or Griots?

Len, I have the 7336 I bought form Tools for Less a few years back, but I never changed the counter weights I don't think.

I only pulled off the stock sand paper backing plate and bolted on the Meguiar's backing plate for the pads.

Then you have the six inch counter weight, but you're using a five pad. Oh well. I doubt it makes as big a deal as it's claimed to be.

In fact, Coastal Tool says for polishing it doesn't matter: LINK

The only exception is when using the 54745 6" Foam Polishing Pad. Due to its light weight and the small-diameter backing pad used (included with pad), it can be used with either the 5" pad or 6" pad counterweight. Porter-Cable outfits the 7424 6" Polisher with the 5" pad counterweight.

Len, thank's for the info. I didn't realize there were different counter-weights. Does 5" or 6" refer to the diameter of the backing plate? Doesn't it matter how big the pad is? Also, wouldn't a plastic vs a metal backing plate of the same size need different counterweights to be truly balanced? I'll have to look at what I have. It's a PC 7424SP. It says " 5"/6" Random Orbit Sander/Polisher Kit ". It came with the PC white foam pad and some Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax. I use the Meguiar's backing plate and their pads.

Does the Griot's metal plate have velcro right on the metal? The Meguiar's plastic plate has a layer of dense foam between the plastic plate and the velcro. This gives me added piece of mind in case there is sudden pressure on the PC and the plate digs into the foam against the body.

I can't imagine cooling holes are needed. The metal plate might conduct heat, but I seriously doubt the foam does. I don't think heat spreads out very well through foam. So even if the plate heated up, I'd think it would just warm the back of the foam pad. Plus, with a plastic pad, not much heat would move through the plastic. Plastic isn't very heat conductive.

I believe that the 5" & 6" refers to the diameter of the backing plate. The PC backing plate is metal, rubber and then the velcro. The holes areNOT for cooling. That's just marketing hype from Griot's. The holes are for the vacumn system for SANDING. You have to understand that the PC 7336/7335 wasn't concieved as an orbital polisher at first. That was, and is, a secondary market for this tool. It is primarily an orbital sander for woodworking, and the holes in the PC heads, both the hook & loop heads and the PSA heads are for the saw dust collection system used in professional woodworking shops. It was a bit after the 7335/7336 came out that PC startered offering the 7424SP, which is the same tool repackaged as an orbital polisher.

I know this to be true only because of the last eighteen years I've spent in industrial sales, nearly three years of it was selling power tools of various types to industrial and contractor accounts. Depending on who I was working for, I sold Porter Cable, DeWalt, and Makita, with some Black & Decker Professional (until B&D converted all of those tools to DeWalt).

My 3-pack of pads arrived today and they are the exact same pads as if you ordered them separately. Ordering the 3-pack is like getting one pad free :up.

Funny thing is the box was marked "Fragile" :nixweiss and obviously they aren't but as luck would have it the box was squashed pretty bad on one side. Consequently all three pads are deformed. I swear if they hadn't marked the box Fragile it would have been fine. Will the pads bounce back into their proper shape in a day or so or should I call Meg's and request a refund or exchange?

Natty, they ought to bounce back into shape. The one time I machine washed mine, one got stuck between the agitator and the side and it was all folded up. After a few days it went back to it's normal shape. If they don't or if it bothers you, definitely call Meguiar's. They will certainly send you new ones. I'd probably call because I like everything to be perfect when I first buy it. However, I'm sure the pads will work fine.

Natty,

I checked the Meguiar's website and found the 3 pad pack but it doesn't specify if it's the 8" or 6.5" pads. How did you specify the correct size pad?

I'd specify the diameter of the pad by specifying the diameter of the backing plate. I'm using Meguiar's "Professional DA Polisher Backing Plate" (W-64DA) which measures just shy of 4-3/4" diameter and the plate specifies for use with Meguiar's 6-1/2" pads. Their 6-1/2" pad's Velcro backer measures an even 5".

I notice the 6" PC backing plate is exactly an inch wider (duh) than the Meguiar's 5", at just under 5-3/4". Extrapolating, the correct pad for this backing plate should have a Velcro backer measuring an even 6".

Greg at Meguiar's customer service extension 139 is pretty knowledgeable on the subject. BTW, Meguiar's sent, with the backing plate, a container of 25 of their Gold Class All Purpose Cleaner Wipes and a coupon for $2.00 from the future purchase of same. Nice.

The part number I ordered is WDAV99-B. And BTW....after only one night out of the box they all bounced right back to their proper shape:up.

What timing, I ordered the 3 pack from Meguiar's this past Tuesday I think it was, and asked the same question. The guy told me the 3 pack only comes with the 6.5" pads...

Does anybody know if I can go to the Meguiar's headquarters in Irvine to buy their products? I'm about 25 minutes away and it would probably be cheaper than paying for shipping charges.

..not likely but sometimes large corporations have a "store" that sells leftovers and seconds...

I think you can because their catalogs have a picture of the inside of a company store. You could try calling them to ask before you drive over there, though.

Griot's backing plate is Porter Cable 6 inch backing plate, part number 18001; I bought mine from a local woodworking supply house. I like it better than the plastic and rubber one Meguiar's has. If you use the Meguiar's backing plate, you need to have a 5" counter weight installed in the PC (Model 7335 already does, 7336 had the 6"). Porter Cable also has a 5 inch backing plate, part number 15000 .

Man, you ROCK! I live about 45 minutes from Hartford and was really getting bummed that nobody I called had any of this stuff.

THANKS!!!!!!

You're welcome. Glad the links proved to be of help. Have fun with your PC when you get it!!

I guess I could, but it isn't completely separated and kind of wrinkled. Plus it has a melted spot in the middle. Picked up a new one today at Woodworkers Supply where they focus on the sanding ability of the PC vice the polishing aspects :)
