Megs PC pads or Griots?

NattyBumppo

Strange name, ain't it?
A friend loaned me his PC (indefinetly :bounce ) but I need to purchase a couple of pads. I've read allot about the Griot's pads but are they worth the extra $$? Is a pad, a pad?

My choices;

Megs 3 pack (two polishing, 1 finishing, both H&L) for $24.95

or

Griot's Orange polishing and red waxing pad which would run an extra $10.00 for the same pads as in the Meg's 3-pack.

Opinions?

Just go with the Meguiars.:up

I've got both. Add my vote for the "Just go with the Meguiars".

The other choice to Griot's would be the pads from Classic Motoring Accessories. Griot's pads are ok, but overpriced. Meguiar's & CMA's area better buy, and Griot's pads don't perform any better.

OK gang, Meg's it is. One last question.......I plan on doing the wife's 1996 Taurus with Meg's #9 Swirl Remover to try and get rid of swirls (duh) and also some fine scratches on the deck lid and around the keyholes (trunk and doors) so should I pick up one of the Meg's dark maroon cutting pads as well? Or will the yellow polishing pads do the trick?

Thanks again folks, your advice is much appreciated :up.

On my 1996 Taurus I've only used the Yellow pads for the No. 9, and the Tan Pads for the No. 20, etc. (or the CMA equivalents).

BTW, you're now the third person, besides myself, in the last four days that has a 1996 Taurus. LOL! I posted the detail job I did of mine in this thread here.

The Meguiars cutting pad is pretty aggressive. Try one or two applications of 2.0 with the yellow pad first, and then if need be try the maroon cutting pad.

Understood. I'll stick with the yellow pads to start with and see how it goes :up .

Next time the wife's car will have the key-chain dingus for unlocking the doors and trunk. That should prevent those nasty, annoying scratches.

LenA - They are a hugely popular vehicle, I see tons of em' on the road. I love the rounded, oval theme (you either love it or hate it) and was sort of sad to see the rear window replaced with a quared off, more traditional style. So far (knocking on my desk), it has been a model of reliability and for the $$, is hard to beat for a standard family sedan. We'll most likely buy another one when this one is ready for the scrap heap.

Vettehead - that is quite a stable of vettes you have there :bow. Back in 1982 my father purchased a new '82 Collector Edition and man it was beautiful. The interior was especially striking with the multi-toned grey leather on the seating surfaces. It wasn't a fast mover (the dark days of American muscle cars) but it sure was purdy!

Edschwab1 - the three pack of pads is listed on the Meg's web site. The pn for the 6.5" three pack is WDAV99-B at $24.95.

I'm on my fifth one, past company cars included, since they came out in 1986. They may not be glamorour, but they're comfortable transportation. This one has been the best over all.

I loved the oval theme, and always will. I always thought it was an interesting way to go for Ford's styling.

This may, however, be my last one. I may either get an Explorer or an Escape next, if I change vehicles in the next year, or wait for the 2004 Ford 500 sedan, or 2004 Ford Crosstrainer suv/crossover vehicle.

I have been using the PC system now for a few years.

I started out with the yellow Meg pads and they were OK.

Then I got turned onto Griot's online, then found out I live close by.

I picked up their red & orange pads and I like them a lot better than Meguiar's.

To me they are easier to work with, and the Velcro on the back seems to like the Meg backing plate better and stick to it.

By the way, anyone try Griot's backing plate, and if so does it make a diff, or is it hype?

Corey, your post got me curious, so I checked out Griots Garage online. I couldn't find any info about their backing plate, but it looked pretty standard. I mean, it doesn't have to do much except hold the pad on. What do they claim theirs does that you think is hype? I can't imagine it works any differently than the Meguiars backing plate, though.

Vettehead, you should sell the 99 and get an 88 Anniversary Edition.

Griot's backing plate is Porter Cable 6 inch backing plate, part number 18001; I bought mine from a local woodworking supply house. I like it better than the plastic and rubber one Meguiar's has. If you use the Meguiar's backing plate, you need to have a 5" counter weight installed in the PC (Model 7335 already does, 7336 had the 6"). Porter Cable also has a 5 inch backing plate, part number 15000 .

Hi Aurora. They don't list the backing plate on line, but I do have the part # for it on my detail site on page II.

In their paper catalogs they compare it is better than the plastic backed ones like the Meguiar's one I have.

The Griot's one is steel, and also has vent holes around it.

They claim it runs cooler than the plastic based ones, thus not heating up your foam pad as much.

I'm not about to change, but I have friends on my 4Runner forum asking me which one to get all the time.

I tell them to just spend a few bucks more and get the Griot's one since they are buying the other stuff from Griot's too such as the Machine polish # 3, BOS wax, red & orange pad, Speed Shine, clay bar, and clay bar holder for the bar to use with the buffer.

Probably save a few bucks in shipping buying it all from one place.

Len, I have the 7336 I bought form Tools for Less a few years back, but I never changed the counter weights I don't think.

I only pulled off the stock sand paper backing plate and bolted on the Meguiar's backing plate for the pads.
