Meg's or 3M?

Hi,

Which would be better in removing light swirl marks/scratches from black paint, Meg's DACP or the 3M PI II light cut RC (or am I getting this confused with the 3M PI III machine glaze?) The 3M is available locally whereas I would need to order the Meg but I remember reading a few posts stating that the 3M product leaves a haze after polishing.

Here are a few pics of the swirls/scratches:

I plan to use the white polishing pad that comes with the PC then switch to the orange light cutting pad if that doesn't work. If I plan to apply the Klasse AIO, would I need to use another product (like Meg's swirl remover) in between?

Thanks for your help!

Ron

The 3m machine glaze is designed to remove swirl marks left by the rubbing coumpond. I would try either the machine glaze or the swirl mark remover.

I like the 3M products, personally. The ones I would go with are the PI III RC (05933) and the PI III MG (05937) back to back. After the MG, you should be able to go right on top with your AIO. I would start with the cutting pad, and then MG with the polishing pad. If for some reason you aren't happy with the finish after that, make one more pass (MG) with a finishing pad.

On the other hand, if you go with the #83 DACP you may or may not need to follow up with #80. There are a couple members that know how to work #83 well enough to where they don't need to follow it with anything, while others always follow with #80.

Both avenues will work and look great, so it's up to you.

Maybe not.. how close are you to Ranney? He stocks #80, 82, and 83.. www.pakshak.com You could even try out one of the other brands he stocks if you'd like.

Those swirls don't look that bad at all really. I've only used DACP, of your choices, and I'd start out w/ DACP on a polishing pad then move to a cutting pad if that wasn't working. You may just need the cutting pad in certain areas where the swirls are the worst.

I just did a black Monte Carlo SS yesterday. Really bad swirls and scratches. Started with DACP and a Megs cutting pad. Didn't touch the swirls and I did multilpe passes. There was no way I was going to finish the car like this, I would be all day. Switched to 3M Perfect it III Rubbing Compound and a Megs cutting pad and this worked really well. Took out about 90% of the swirls, the stuff that was left would need a rotary and even that might not get it.

Normally I would finish off with 3M perfect it III Machine Glaze but I have some Megs #9 I wanted to use up. I applyed with a Megs Polishing pad and I was very happy with the results. There was very little haze after the RC and #9 handled it well.

There are very good products in both Megs and 3M lines.

Yep, this is why I love 3M products so much.

Thanks for all the responses!

JDookie,

Is there a difference between the 3M PI III RC and the 3MPI II light cut RC? I could not find the one that you are talking about. Would the one that I have be too abrasive?

perry,

I just got off the phone with Ranney (very nice guy). I'm on a different island so I wouldn't be able to pick it up but shipping would be much less than most other sites. Thanks.

Once again, thanks guys for helping out yet another new guy.

Aloha,

Ron

Yup, the 3M P-It III RC #05933 with yellow cutting pad and Meg's #82 with white polishing pad sealed with NXT and topped with #16 is my favorite combo to get rid of rotary buffer swirls induced by the dealers. :xyxthumbs

The Perfect III is 3M's newer products. PI III RC and PI II light cut RC are very close in abrasivenes. PI II is slighty more abrasive. I perfer the PI III because it dusts a lot less and leaves a nicer finish.

Exactly. I am actually using PI II RC (39002) and love it, but it does dust very badly. I just recently posted a few questions about 3M products and it was determined that the newer PI III products are the better way to go.

Here's a link to an internet company I found tha carries the 3M products, so you can see what they look like. Premium Auto Care - 3M Products

Okay I finally located a place that sells the 3M PI III RC and picked up a quart along with the MG. Will work on it this weekend and post pics of the finished product (keeping my fingers crossed).

pontgta,

Thanks for the link. The only thing is that UPS to Hawaii is crazy because it needs to go 2nd day air.

Aloha,
