I have a starion that has been neglected...It doesnt have a clear coat. I use pinnacle claybar, swirl reducer, IHG, then one grand blitz for wax on my Civic Si. Now i tried a 1sq foot on teh starion and the swirl reducer and the deep glaze took some of the paint off with it. The rag turned black (black car)

Shoudl I continue to do this? Or is there other products availible for non clear coat cars

please and thanks

If you do a search of IHG on this forum, most posts will say that it's on the way out the door. This is because it is typically a coverup, it doesn't last very long, and it doesn't work well in conjunction to many of our current systems (Klasse and Zaino). I would look into a sealant like those two, both of which work well on paints without clearcoats.

Since you paint is not clearcoated polishing it will cause some of the paint to come off on the towel. I assert that you are trying to remedy swirls, otherwise you wouldn't be trying swirl reducer. Did that little portion you tried, help the swirls?

What you refer to as "non-clearcoat" paint is typically called "two-stage paint" because the paint is applied in two stages: a color coat, which dries to a dull finish, and a "clearcoat" that protects the color coat, has anti-UV components, and dries to the desired finish (usually glossy).

Single-stage paint is a color coat that dries to a desired finish -- usually glossy.

Most all newly made cars have two stage paint. There are some advantages to single stage paint, however. One thing I have always liked is that you can polish down to fresh (unoxidized and unmarred) paint. You do this by removing a small amount of the top of the coat. Of course, the top paint you remove is going to go somewhere and one of the places it goes is on to what ever you are using to apply the polish. So, it is normal and expected that the cloth you were using would turn black.

If your paint has any defects: oxidation, scratchs, etc. I suggest you continue to polish the car until you expose clean, fresh paint. Do a search to find the many times the good people on this site have explained how to use polishes and rubbing compounds.

When you have finished, you can apply Klasse, Zaino, or any other product of your choice. If you chose Zaino, Zaino makes a special protectant designed for single stage paint. If you use Zaino, you will first apply the base coat product (called Z1) which is used both for single and two-stage paints. Then you will use Z3, the gloss and protection coat, which is designed for single stage paints.

Welcome and good luck.

Since I am cheap and lazy, I am going to just use z5 on my non-clearcoated Integra. I still dont understand why z3 would make a difference if you use z5 first on a non-clearcoated finish. Maybe I will try out some z2 and report back!

Yes the part i did try with the swirl reducer helped dramtically. Although i dont like Meguirs swril reducer, hard to get off...

Thanks for the hints guys, i will check out he auto store for that zaino stuff.

Since when doesnt Acura put a clear coat on ITR's?

My 00 Si has one ?? For 25K it better have a clearcoat!

Excellent!:) Excellent pics too by the way...

What was your LSP of choice? Zaino's one of my faves for those metallics.

I've got a GS on the books for a week from now... same color, just finished the owners other car... 360 CS.

Thank you sir! Loved working on this car, the paint was very easy to work with.

Wow! I love that car! Excellent work on that beast! The first thing I noticed was how much metal flake there is in that paint... gorgeous! (I love red guts also...)

I agree with the flake pop comments! Beautiful finish shine and pop.

I also love "red guts" on the right exterior color and that one works for me.

Stunning results, Nick and thanks.
