NavindraLR said:when u say 90s porsche turbo, which one are u talking about? arent there 2 different body styles which were in production during the 90's, as well as one being single turbo, and one being twin turbo (turbo s?? is that the name of the twin turbo????) damn porsche is confusing me... but either way, id say try to find a 96 porsche turbo (twin) since they have allwheel drive, and it seems like your dad would care more about handling then muscle, even though the porsche has both.
There are even more variants than that. There is a 91-92 964 based Turbo (single turbo no all wheel drive) using a 3.4 flat six. Then there is the 3.6 Turbo built in 94. There also was a very limited production âہ“Sâ€Â version of the 3.6 with additional HP and a couple of other up grades. 1996 started the production of the twin turbo, all wheel drive car based on the 993 (includes other turbo first such as electronic fuel injection and hydraulic valve adjusters). There was a limited production âہ“Sâ€Â version of this car also with increased performance and upgrades. The âہ“Sâ€Â cars are the rarest of these cars with the normal 3.6 being next rarest. All these Turbo's are "air cooled".
The 964 based turboâ€â„¢s still have turbo lag but are a blast to drive. The twin turboâ€â„¢s of the 993 solved much of the turbo lag of the cars from the factory and are stupid fast. All the turboâ€â„¢s have a huge aftermarket following and can be modified to products obnoxious power. The factory 993 based TT is a fantastic modern super car that can be driven every day right out of the box. Cost of maintenance is not bad at all and reliability is great. However, a pre-purchase inspection is a must to make sure the car has been treated appropriately.
The Maserati is great looking car with an awesome sounding Ferrari engine. However maintenance cost would be a concern to me since it is a Ferrari based car. The 348 can be a great value but it is somewhat costly to maintain in comparison to many other cars. Prior to the 360 most Ferrariâ€â„¢s required were very expensive to service because (i) the service intervals are shorter and more often than most other cars and (ii) the services are very labor intensive. This doesnâ€â„¢t even consider the reliability of the cars. With most used Ferrariâ€â„¢s it is not the cost of admissions that gets you but the service and maintenance.
Of the cars mentioned in the original post the Porscheâ€â„¢s are probably the most reliable and cost efficient for maintenance. But besides the S versions are probably also the most common (if you can call a turbo 911 common). The Maserati is the most GT of the cars. This will be a fun decision and research project. Nothing like sayingâ€Â¦.well I need to test drive the Ferrari before I make a decision
