Charles,
I can understand the expectation that one should stick to discussing products sold/endorsed by the particular sponsor in its particular forum within the website and I think it's fair to expect community members to abide by that. A reminder can be posted to please do so out of respect to the sponsors and that the sponsor-moderator reserves the right to delete posts/threads that heavily involve/promote competitor's products. I don't see this as a "hindrance of speech" when I look at it, as you noted, from the paying sponsor's point of view. FWIW,I don't see the need to discuss competitor's products, at least at length, in a sponsor forum.
I think this statement is worthy of attention.
As for "open" forum discussions located within general detailing product and process forums, well, if there is an implied expectation that the community should limit discussion to products associated with or endorsed by Detail City, agreeable or not, that decision is the right of the Detail City administrators. If that were indeed the case,( which I DO NOT believe it is) I feel it should be "made official" as well. That way everyone knows exactly what and what not to post about when they visit here.
It was always my assumption that the DC admins have no issue with "open product" discussion with the exception, again understandably, of the sponsor forums.
I don't think there's much to fret about when looked at this way. There seems to be a place here for whatever product discussion one wishes to have.

anytime a new product comes around worth mentioning that is not from a dedicated sponser, its literally pushed a side or simply given an alternative to a product thats carried by one of the sponsers.
